    Ice skating Bangkok

    Ice skating Bangkok

I took the kids ice skating today at the Esplanade entertainment complex on Ratchadapisek Road. We arrived there about 11:00 had an early lunch and then went ice skating.

Ratchadapisek is more convenient for me as I live on Pattanakarn. The entertainment service and music there is good, (you can have a beer while looking at the kids skate) but the size of the rink is much smaller than the ice rink in Sam Rong. The shopping at the Esplanade is typical up-market Thai style and the dress sense there very much similar to the Emporium and Siam Paragon.

It is much cheaper to eat and skate once you are in the full sized ice rink in the Imperial World at Sam Rong, which is more of an ice hokey rink than a figure skating rink. There is a portrait of a younger Thaksin who seemed to have opened the place sometime ago. ( Dont be put off)

Shopping is typical rural Thai which is both fun and entertaining if not a bit noisy.

At the rink there are no comfortable seating and no waitress service but down stairs there are little bars on the basement floor with some lovely girls willing to make themselves noticed so don’t take the wife.

A reasonable command of Thai is essential though.

The parking is similar in both places (exceptionally tight) but the price different of both food and skating is considerably.

Imperial world can be reached fairly easily as it is on the old Sukhumvit road heading towards Samut Prakarn. The Esplanade is the first shopping complex after Fortune Town and about 300 meters before Jusco and Robinson.

The temperature is way too high in there. The first time there we were heavily overdressed in jeans and jumpers. The kid was soaked through after 2 falls. Next time we just wore T-shirts and shorts and it was much more enjoyable.

Another thing that slightly annoyed me was the centre being coned off for the 2 figure skaters and their coach. Didn't stop me and the kid using it, though.

Also sent a couple of speed skaters clattering but that was just me being a knut.

There's an ice rink at the Imperial Mall on Lat Prao. It's not the livliest place to hang out, but they've got a climbing wall and no end of massage shops as well.

Live next to Esplanade and now that it has opened, I spend 50% of my nights out there. Cheap, a good range of bars and restaurants and great eye candy.

On the latter point, I ensure that I get there (after work) at least 30 minutes prior to announcing as such to the g/f!

We went to the Esplanade again last week and they've moved forward the opening time so by 11am when we got on the ice it was already slushing up. That's the downside, the upside is the unbelievable amount of top class totty. It was wall to wall.

Downstairs in the food court area we went to Shabu Shabu for the first time (usually we just go to Fuji). We had started eating and then the waitress came over and told us we had only got till 3pm - just over an hour. The intention was for the missus to have her fill then go way shopping for an hour or so whilst I remained there slowly munching away. I'm a very slow eater and this 'school dinner' approach was a bit of a downer but I guess people must have abused this 'all you can eat' policy in the past. It was good food but not a pleasant dining experience.

I guess I'm used to more civilised behaviour at the dining table as I live in Isan. Bangkok appears to be full of savages.
