Bangkok Subway Staircases - what's the problem?

The staircases in every Bangkok subway station has been 'out of order' for several months now and probably will be for several months in the future.

What's the problem with them? They are concrete staircases, what has gone wrong in each one of them that has made them unfit for public use?

How can staircases be "out of order"?

Maybe someone put the signs up to keep people out for more nefarious activities than caring about peoples safety ?

I thought they did that so they could channel people to the escalators where they can check bags for bombs, etc.

^ Yes that sounds like it could be the reason. So I assume they will be closed permanently now, either until the bomb threat is over or somebody in charge wakes up.

What a pathetic reason it is, they don't even check for bombs. They glance in your bag, and that's about it.

I walked through with a big cardboard box in a bag the other week, can't remember what I had in it. The security looked in my bag and saw I had a large box. It didn't say 'bomb' on the side, so he let me through.

Yes they would, but me thinks that the Thai government would be even less impressed with their stunts than the Aussie...

The people that work there probably think they are escalators too, but haven't figured out how to turn them on yet.

Pish and Tosh! I've just come back from Bangkok, all the metro staircases were working fine. What's your agenda? Sounds like you might be an agent of the invisible hand trying to make the government look bad or a tefler living in the cash-deprived suburbs.

The staircases are always working. There's nothing not to work about them. It's just they are always blocked off at the entrances.

When did they start having those security guards who almost, but not quite, look in your bag for explosives?
