Budget Hotel Recommendations near Don Muang Anyone?

As the title says.....If just passing through BKK can anyone recommend a cheap and cheerful place near the airport? If an internal flight can't be had I don't fancy a trek into the city, only to trek out again the next morning. I know that there's a hotel connected to the airport but it looks like one of those places where the staff call you 'sir' and pretend to like and respect you.

    Danbo.

A mate of mine last week had 10 hours in Bangkok.

I looked up asiarooms.com for him and there were a good selection of cheap hotels within 10 mins from the airport. 600-1800 baht.

I then realised his company was paying so booked him into the amarai airport hotel for $130 US (i called them and got a discount down from $240)
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

Danners, try the Majestic Suites, lower end of Sukhumvit. It's only 25 minutes in a taxi to/from the airport (honest, if you use all the toll roads). I think I paid 1,200 a night just before Christmas - small but spotless rooms, air, TV, fridge, in-room safe, etc etc, plus a crappy American Breakfast thrown in. It also has the advantage of being stumbling distance from hundreds of girls who will lick your bits for a small fee.
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

Danbo. We Train Guest House is next door to my village. Clean but spartan rooms at about 500B per night. Has aircon and an olympic sized pool, plus you can walk to my place in 10 minutes and have a beer. Its also 10 minutes from the airport and they will call the taxi for you.

That has to be the clincher!

They should include it in their advertising brochure.

If you hop across a small creek, and dodge the cobras in the tall grass you can get to my house in 5 minutes. WE TRAIN is a great place. With the help of the Japanese government and Jimmy and Roseynn Carter they have set up a training center for women who have it rough. Abusive husbands, HIV and the such. They train them for new work, and have a nice nursery and school for their kids. The guest house is used mostly by Thai government workers coming for seminars.

Its clean but nothing to write home about. But with an early flight out, it makes it alot easier.

'fraid not. I'm out for a couple of weeks in April - into BKK and straight oop North. This time my flights work out okay, but when I was trawling through those available some were great for coming in, but left at 1 am or some such ungodly hour....And as much I love hanging around DonM what with the 7-11 and all I would rather book into a room for a day. In BKK I usually stay near the Emporium, but the drive in and out is just too depressing for 1/2 day. Sad to say the novelty of BKK has worn off for me - the city centre at least. I nearly freaked out in MBK the last time trying to find an exit.....I felt as if I had gone to hell and hell sold mobile telephones......

That's a shame, but I feel sure there's some good folks in Chiang Mai who would be honoured to spend a fews hours with a headcase like you mate.

TK Palace on Chang Wattana is fairly close to the airport, around 15-20 minutes away and it's ok. I think it cost around 1,200 Baht a night. I will see if I can find a phone number for it later.
