What's your most hated 200 square metres in Bangkok?

I know we did this a year or so back but I remember it being quite fun. Which 200 square metres of Bangkok do you loathe with a passion? Mine used to be the Victory Monument island but in all fairness it's looking a lot better these days.

My vote is going to the top end of Silom Road from Patpong to Robinsons on the corner and down the other side. I found myself in that area today for the first time in ages and can't think of one good thing to say about it. You have endless shady characters (both Thai and farang) just standing and loitering in doorways. Whispered invitations to ladyboy shows or to purchase hardcore porn on DVD. Establishments like Gulliver's pub (is that the name?) that look truly horrible in the cold light of day. The whole area has a perpetual greyness and grubbiness care of the shadow cast from the elevated skytrain tracks. Then there's the endless motorcycle taxis snaking their way along the footpaths, the huge silent metal containers that store stuff in readiness for the night market and of course the potholes and litter. And yet in the middle of it all, you'll have some bastion of retail commerce like Boots the pharmacy or Coffee World with their pristine shop fronts and appealing aromas.....but you can't polish a turd can you?

My knowledge of BKK is hardly extensive, but I'll go for the pavement section 2 meters wide by 100 meters long between Soi 7 and Soi 11 on Sukhumvit.

The airport. I absolutely hate that place. Overpriced (900 baht for a Thai massage? 800 baht for a paperback??) and full of wankers who don't know how to stand in a straight line. And don't even get me started on the idiots who work the metal detectors.

I agree - I was there two days ago and they wanted to charge 100 baht for a 330ml bottle of water. I settled on a 180baht pint of hinekin instead.

Oh and a bottle of thai whisy sold for 80 baht in the 7/11 is 140 baht.

All airports are rip offs thats a fact. I dont like Pratunam, around the Indra Hotel, too much pollution, both noise and air.

I think you'll find most airports are the same world over.

I member having a lay-over in Bali and getting some change for a drink and blowing the lot on a Jacks and coke about $18 Aus.
Also having to leave the bar in the Cairns airport early because I was paying twice the price for a local beer.

What was your experience with the metal detection staff, Memock?

The metal detection staff are just too damn slow. Does it make sense to have just one guy working the machine? And too many assholes in line and trying to cut in front of me when I have baggage to check. When I don't have any bags to check, well, I've got to cut my way through a mob to get to the ticket counter.

The 500 baht departure tax pisses me off too. It's like "thank you for visiting, now pay." I know it's supposably not included in the price of the ticket, blah blah blah, but it's just annoying. I've heard they're going to charge 700 baht at the new airport when (or if) it opens.

This is slowly turning into a rant, so I'll stop now.

If you must but in my defence I would like to state that I have no defence for my dishonesty.
I woke up early this morning, turned on the computer and next thing you know I've theived a totally poxy thread from somewhere I just can't seem to recall......

It was an act of stupidity, another in the catalogue of incredibly stupid things I do online, but nevertheless a harmless act because only 4.783% of TD users ever read my posts!!

How's it going on the otter place?

Maybe some one will cruise past later and think "Oi, that farking Philstole that thread off of Poolcleaner. Wait till I tell Diaw. He'll be right confused"

Your just jealous cos you don't recognise any of our famous 19th century greats.
It took me all of 20 seconds to spot Douglas Jardine.
Now he was a great Brit, in spite of being English.

    Get your threads right CMN.....*christ*..

I wonder if this is at all kosher?
    I like breaking boundaries...

Some silly old american said of my nighborhood...
Pratunam, near the Indra Hotel. So damn noisy and polluted.
    The great man himself...
What about the soul-destroying walk from Robinsons on the corner of Sukhumwit soi 19 to about Soi 5?
Sneering, leering massage parlour touts and bone idle tuk-tuk drivers. The dust and gravel and doodoo from the construction at the Ambassador, The tourist walkway with sweaty Middle Eastern tourists haggling over the prices of oversize luggage. The hill-tribe woman and baby on the scrounge. All those hairdressing shops with an assortment of trollops sitting in the window and winking at you in a coquettish come-hither manner. The dangling electrical wires near the Buccara Indian restaurant. Skinny tailor's shop touts with cream gaberdine trousers and swarthy complexions. Hardcore porn DVDs, handcuffs and flick-knifes, Thai silk wraparounds, high-power binoculars and carved wooden solitaire boards. It's 'orrible.
