What's your most hated 200 square metres in Bangkok?
I know we did this a year or so back but I remember it being quite fun. Which 200 square metres of Bangkok do you loathe with a passion? Mine used to be the Victory Monument island but in all fairness it's looking a lot better these days.
My vote is going to the top end of Silom Road from Patpong to Robinsons on the corner and down the other side. I found myself in that area today for the first time in ages and can't think of one good thing to say about it. You have endless shady characters (both Thai and farang) just standing and loitering in doorways. Whispered invitations to ladyboy shows or to purchase hardcore porn on DVD. Establishments like Gulliver's pub (is that the name?) that look truly horrible in the cold light of day. The whole area has a perpetual greyness and grubbiness care of the shadow cast from the elevated skytrain tracks. Then there's the endless motorcycle taxis snaking their way along the footpaths, the huge silent metal containers that store stuff in readiness for the night market and of course the potholes and litter. And yet in the middle of it all, you'll have some bastion of retail commerce like Boots the pharmacy or Coffee World with their pristine shop fronts and appealing aromas.....but you can't polish a turd can you?
Awful, farking awful!
