THAILAND:- Trip Report - Bang Saen Aquarium

So, David was dragged by the squeeze, our rugrats and the extended Thai Family (you know the deal) dragged kicking and screaming to Bang Sean.
I don't like the place and will do a Trip Report on it later.

That said, there is a bright spot and if you have kids ... they'll most like love it.

I'm referring to the 'Aquarium' - The Institute of Marine Science Burapha University สถาบันวิทยาศาสตร์ทางทะเล มหาวิทยาลัยบูรพา

Were the kids ready to explore and learn?

    Heck Yes !

The displays were good. In Thai and English.

    TV's where needed

Bit of fun with the lighting

    How much entertainment?

    Allow for about 2 hours

Great place to escape the midday heat.

Lots more soon ... just have to bring the media together.

    OH

    2,000 posts ... I like milestones

Perspective is everything ... it's the difference between going through an ordeal or going through an adventure..

^Love watching the top lit jellies at the aquarium.

Garden eels are my favourite though.

Will there be fish ? Lots of jelly and I will bring my spoon. Dreadfully muddy beach at Bang Saen. Best avoided, I think.

I've never been there, but I know people at Burapha and at PMBC. Scarborough sealife centre not very good at all - don't even serve fish n chips! I found "The Deep" in Kingston-upon-Hull to be a bit small and a bit of an anti-climax, and not as good as the one in Southsea, which has otters, mudskippers, and big rays that almost leap out!
I wish there was a nice big aquarium like they have in the GCC and in the USA.

My Son goes to France with his school class in the morning and they are visiting " Nausicaa Aquarium "
I even exchanged 20 pounds into Euros so he's got some pocket money.

Fantastic ! He will be able buy two eclairs and a cup of coffee. Chuck him a couple of quid extra and send him to Marks & Spencer. Four in a box, lovely, proper chocolate.

Apologies for the delay, the 2 rugrats which seem so happy in the images and Vids below picked a bug at Kindy
and have been feeling poorly these past few days.

Not to worry, 2 new toys arrived in the post today and their smiles and playfull nature has returned.

Apologies also for the crappy photos and vids. I've got a cheapy Chinese phone and it captures the images.

Enough apologies, on with the review

So, first up there isn't a lot of images of Fish, a few vids, sure.
I don't want to spoil your experience at the Aquarium.

Suffice to say, there are heaps of fish and presented well.

Second time there for the boys, they were maybe 18 months old there.

Twice as old now in this image. Same porthole.

Same porthole, heaps of fish also.

Opposite that viewing window is an interesting display on the gestation of a Shark.

This shows the Shark growing internally at 1/2/3/4 months.
You can see it wiggle from the 3/4 month.
There is an English explanation as well as the Thai one.

There is also a larger viewing platform. Above the Fish might not appear so large but ...

So, for perspective a member of the extended Family provides scale.

    Above tank

Now, what would a Thai thread be without a dose of Thaism?

    In the Aquarium ...

Damm they look like a throw back to the Dinosaur era!

On the BBQ plate below, bought at the local Fish Market on New Year's Eve.

Extended Family enjoying the exotic tastes of Thailand.

Me? I waited for the freshly caught and cooked Prawns.

Here are 2 images, not mine of the place.

Apparently, this whale washed up on Bang Sean Beach some time ago.

Now, even a wrap for the gift shop. Normally I'm express through these places but, they are reasonably priced.

    Sticker Books for 80 BHT

A fishing rod with 8 magnetic tipped aqua life for 100 Bht.
    We bought 2.

Even the cat liked the look of them.
They lasted for some time until the Boys decided that they were also a half decent Star Wars light sabre and the force soon passed from the rods.

    Where?

    Cost?

I have a 5 year Thai drivers license and, in the past, that was enough for me to get the 'Thai Price' but the staff said there
was a change and to receive the Thai price now, I had to show my work permit (or similar) and I no hab.

    Open:- 8.30 - 5.00

Positives:- Cool, not crowded (we where there earlier this year, sort of high tourist season), reasonable value.
Some English around on the displays.
    Reasonable Parking

Negatives:- Suited to the younger audience, or young at heart.

Not convinced? Below is a full view of the Aquarium with the fancy music. Captures it fairly well.

    .
Verdict:- RECOMMENDED Well recommended if you have kids, or Young at Heart
    .

Just reading Miss Kit's News Item ... http://teakdoor.com/thailand-and-asi...pens-aqua.html (Natural Resources and Environment Minister opens Aqua Dome)

and that is what this place does miss, almost de rigueur for modern Aquariums/tourist Attractions ...

    ... a walk through tunnel.

EDIT: have had some issues with PhotoBucket and some images in the OP and following posts.
I have a new image storage solution and, with the assistance of a Mod/Admin, I'll have those back soon.

Thnx for the pics & vids. Sorry to see that your PB pix are gone. I saw them some days ago, but didn't comment. Same thing happened to all but 1 (Taiwan, the latest) of my pic threads. Pics are hosted on PB and now they're gone. I can't be assed to host/link them again, due to my crappy net. Anyway, have a great Sunday, cheers!
