Cool The new Don Muang airport.

Many big changes since my last visit, brand new security area for domestic departures, and i
I noticed the international terminal is now open.

On the way out to airport you see the new MRT line rapidly taking shape, with many of the stations all built, nice looking stations, too!

I always enjoyed Don Muang, now it is getting and better. (I usually hate airports)

To think they actually closed it down for a spell!

Traffic coming into the airport needs some organizing as does the taxi queue for arriving passengers.

I remember my first visit to Thailand in '91 and landing at Don Muang. Going outside and being hit by a blanket of humid air and the smell of frangipani in and around arrivals.

Never been a fan of Swampybum.

I remember the last stale Sandwich I ate from there and the Total stand-over priced Taxi Driver with His special price to the Bus Station.

the place has that 1960's look about it, same the food!

I still remember my first arrival at Don Muang, rainy season, october 1978, and disembarking a horrid Bagladesh Biman Boeing 727, (no jet ways then), and the blast of hot, humid, diesel soaked air as I walked down the stairway.

I've never quite been the same since.

Bangkok was a real shockeroo to my young American senses.

I heard stories about that and because I never came across it at the Airport I just put it down to an urban myth.

    Yeah, looks nearly done.

Until you pass the main terminal at Bang Sue and see they've barely put a few of the pilings in.

Reckon they've finished outside DM way too early on purpose so people it and get excited about it.

    2022 at least.

^100% true, and there were 3 places inside the airport offering that "service". A great way to be relaxed before boarding a long-haul.

I've never flown into Swampy - shows when i last visited!!

The first trip to Thailand, we arrived in February, the wall of heat, smells etc. I still remember. We got on a bus to go to the domestic flights to get to Samui.

My suitcase was full of french wine and cheese. When i opened it on arrival on Samui, the stench of cheese was 'orrible!!

Does this mean that the next time, i can fly into Don Muang and not have to change airports?

No European carries land there so you will have to take shuttle from Swampy to DM. Shuttle is free if you have ticket to Samui.

Depending on the carrier and flight, Pats...
Don Muang is largely a domestic flight hub with the odd international/SE Asian regional schedules here or there...

Swampy handles most international arrivals with some steady domestic flights as well.

Everyone [expect the confounding and short-sighted Thai authorities] realizes what they should've done years ago when DM sat dormant before it's revival - operate two major international arrival airports and have both balance a share of all domestic flights.....ajoining a decent and direct shuttle link between the two, which of course was discussed but never materialized.

With the overwhelming activity at Swampy, still one the heaviest trafficked international airports in the world, one would think that a sensible relief effort of dual international/domestic airports would be in order.

Nothing will come of it unless there's a corrupt profit involved somewhere.
It is Thailand. And nothing gets done without graft involved.....measured in one way or another.

It was no myth, you could get a shot away downstairs at the "cough" hairdressers. Never minded having to do a bit of transit in that airport, they weren't much good at actually giving haircuts though.

30 years ago I was told of a couple who holidayed in Thailand and his wife would not let him out of her sight. Then at the airport just before the holiday ended he went for a haircut at the airport and got a BJ in the barbers chair. Wife non the wiser.
Oh well at least I know now that it's not bullshit .

    actually not 20th and declining

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...senger_traffic

It is a tad better than when new with inadequate female toilets, lost luggage and rip off taxi touts allowed

As a regular flyer its terrible compared to many others including Medan KL SingaporeMarco Polo,Adam, prague or Biaritz which Ive visited in last few months.

Only Fuimicino and crowded Gatwick have same horrid experience recently,Jeddah and Riyadh of course are more like bus stations for ruggerers

I wouldn't even put in tip 4 in Thailand for ordinary user, worse this year.

Phuket,C Rai C Mai Hat Yai or Don Muang all better/

Of course I am under no illusion it was designed or built for the benefit of travellers, the occupation , the toilets, runways and ofcourse the car park mafias, oh and the planted goods duty free frame ups

Maybe because the Internet and forums were not yet invented, or were in their infancy. I learned of it by word - of - mouth from friends who could sniff out a sexual escapade in a nunnery .
