    Getting Stabbed on Sukhumvit Road

Hi, here is my horror story of when I was mugged on Sukhumvit road in around September 2014. It is 100% true.

I was at Bangkok's well-known clubbing area, Route 66, along with a western girl (let's call her Sarah) I had met that night as well as another guy (let's call him John). Sarah obviously liked me, but John had his eyes set on Sarah - classic love triangle scenario. It got later into the night, and I tried to instigate getting a taxi back with Sarah, so as to take her back to my place. We eventually inched away and sat down together in a taxi, but just as it was pulling away a pissed John appeared at the window demanding that he came with in order to, he claimed, save him money on his journey home by sharing the taxi. Of course he was trying to cock-block me as much as possible - he believed he had claim to this girl as he had been the one to invite her out that evening through Tinder. Of course I wouldn't swoop in and steal a date like this, but we had been out for a number of hours and Sarah and John hadn't been hitting it off or even talking much, so I naturally made the most of the situation (surely he cannot "bagsy" a girl for the whole evening, use the opportunity or lose it mate). So all three of us pulled away in the taxi, heading towards BTS On Nut (the sky-train station) which is near where my apartment was located. It was now very awkward in the car as me and Sarah now had to act as if we were going back to our own places separately. Under different circumstances, I wouldn't have put up with this crap and not given a shit about making my motives clear. However the idea of her coming back to my place is not something I wanted to draw attention to, as it would not only have caused a confrontation between me and John, but it would also probably have put Sarah off coming back to my place at all! Everyone knows that "coming back to my place" = sex, and often as soon as you remind a girl of that, it rings alarm bells and she starts thinking that she's being manipulated and that all you want is sex, and then to kick her out the next morning, when actually it's not necessarily true: you want sex, but you enjoy the company too (usually!). So the situation was a complicated and awkward. Eventually it resulted in us all getting out the taxi at the On Nut skytrain station and the plan was that we were all going to hail taxis to get back to our individual homes, although John was to simply take the taxi we were already in, back to his place. My hidden agenda however was that I was simply going to walk back to my apartment (which was in walking distance from the sky train station) with her. So the first part of the plan worked: John left in the taxi, probably realizing in his drunken delirium a few minitues later what was actually going on.

Everything stated so far explains why the taxi didn't just drop me and Sarah outside my apartment, which, if it had, the nasty event that was about to follow wouldn't have happened and everything would have been fine. It gives me another reason as to why I look back in anger at this twat of a cockblocker.

So there is a short walk to my apartment from the Sky-train station. We are walking along, it's dark, there are no other people around and few cars, and I am thinking in my head (Yes! Yes! Yes! I'm getting some action tonight!). Suddenly however, Sarah screams as a small Thai guy comes up behind us and rips her handbag from her shoulder. She is gripping onto it fairly hard, but he is wrenching it even harder. The next moment he is running off down the Sukhumvit road with her bag (containing her new Iphone). Shes crying now, and shouting "Stop him! My new Iphone! Stop him!" I glance at her and then back at the mugger. I think to myself "What do I do?". Now I was pretty drunk, and this Thai guy was also quite small, so I fancied my chances and ran after him. It would have felt wrong, just to stand there and do nothing, plus that would have totally killed my image, I could have kissed goodbye any chance of any action I was going to get later. At least if I made an attempt I might still be in for some luck. Anyway, as I ran I saw him attempt to leap over the wire fence that runs underneath and in line with the Sky train in the middle of the Sukhumvit road. But as he tried to jump, he fell and got caught in the wire and the bush next to the fence. He was lying on the ground shouting, I grabbed his leg and started pulling him out from under the bush. I started yelling at him aggresively, hoping that he would panic and throw the bag to me and run off. But as I stood there holding his ankle with both my arms, suddenly his friend (of whom I hadn't seen before) came over the top of the fence and lashed out at my arm with what was either a big knife or a broken bottle (it was so quick I didn't see it properly). I'm guessing it was a knife judging by the clean cut it made to my arm. A masssive gash was made to the inside of my left fore-arm - he had cut through all of my muscle right down to the bone, but the worst part is, he severed my ulnar nerve (the lasting effects of which I will explain later). Fortunately he had missed any major arteries or veins - of course I didn't know any of this at the time. I jumped back in shock looking at the huge bleeding wound in my arm. I proceeded to run away back in the direction of where I had come from, towards Sarah, holding the wound closed with my right hand to stop the bleeding. I just kept gasping "Oh my God" as I was in utter shock at what had just happened. I took my shirt off, that I was wearing over a t-shirt, and wrapped it round the wound. We hailed a taxi to the nearest hospital (Sukhumvit hospital) in Ekkamai, burst in and held up my arm, that I was still clenching, to the first member of staff I saw. Of course in Thailand, like most of the world, only if you can show that you have the funds, will you receive medical treatment. After a while, some of my friends had arrived to see me and they informed me that the hospital bill would be about 30,000 baht (about 500 pounds). If I was willing to pay this upfront, the hospital could call in a doctor and have me stitched up. It was lot of money to me, as I was just on an English teacher's salary, but it was pay-able with the help of family and friends. The catch I found out later was that this was just the initial payment. After three days at the hospital, they asked me to cough up a FURTHER 60,000 baht. I was pretty angry as they hadn't made it clear I was going to be charged again. But from having heard other stories, this wasn't actually that large a bill (I heard about another guy ending up in another hospital after he got into a fight and had to have an operation that cost about 400,000 baht that needed to be paid within a week's time-frame).

To go off at a slight tangent as it is worth mentioning: Whilst I was staying in the hospital I met a patient who seemed to me to be a real-life psychopath from Taiwan! - he told me wherever he went he always carried a rucksack around that contained a gas-mask and a hammer, to be used for self-defence! It was true as well, he showed them both to me. He was also kicking up a fuss about paying his hospital bill, though unlike me, actually refusing to pay and taking out legal action against the hospital. He ended up calling down a detective from the Taiwanese embassy to pledge a case against paying the full bill. The hospital reluctantly agreed to allow him to only pay 60%, but as he left the premises, a couple of thai guys slashed him with a knife accross his shoulder and he would have suffered further injury had he not wielded his hammer from his ruck-sack! This event I didn't see, he could have made this up, but I don't doubt at all the possibiity that this hospital, for all it's prestige, also could have connections to a darker underside.

So the result of my injury was that since my ulnar nerve had been severed, I lost functionality and sensation to half my left arm and hand. The thai doctor obviously didn't do a great job of re-connecting the ulnar nerve as well, since, after having it checked out here in the UK, it was shown that the nerve was not regenerating properly. I then had to have it re-operated on in the UK. Due to the delay therefore, there has been severe muscle wastage in my hand. I have completely lost the muscle in between my thumb and forefinger in my left hand. Plus my whole hand has thinned out. The operation I had in the UK included a tendon transfer, so that I have managed to avoid the "ulnar claw" that is exhbitied by people with ulnar nerve problems, but despite this, the strength and dexterity of my left hand has diminished a lot. I am told that even when my ulnar nerve regenerates, it will never reach 100% regeneration, and also the muscle wastage is permanent, as several of the muscles have wasted beyond the point of no return.

As for the girl, she asked how I was for the next few days, but then after that I never heard from her. She never at any point offered to pay any of the hospital bill. I haven't spoken to her since the incident. That's a romantic end to the story right there.

The moral of the story is: be careful what you wish for... (I wished for GASH that night!)

On a serious note, from speaking to other people and hearing other stories, my advice would be to never fight back in any incident like the one I described, don't try to be the hero, it's not worth it, even to get laid!

In spite of this incident, I still love living in Thailand, and have plans to go back. I think I was just very unlucky.

I could upload some pictures, but don't know how to do it, perhaps someone could tell me.

shitty night out - but you are right about walking away , especially in a foreign country - things can go from simply bad to catastrophic very quickly and you realise that a few more millimeters could also have caused you to lose your life

I admire your courage for coming on this forum and telling us that you tried to shag a woman who has an iphone

Wow, you were really unlucky. It appears all circumstances that night conspired against you.

Wish you well for the future and glad you do not see this incident as indicative of Thailand in general.

    Take care

.... and all for the promise of a drunken fuck.

chickenhead thai blokes nearly always carry knives, have back up and work in packs.

similar thing happened to a friend of mine on sukhumvit a couple of years back, he rather stupidly annoyed a bunch of thais and before he knew it he was punched in the face by one and stabbed in his upper arm by another, he had put his arm up to stop the knife going into his chest. this was mid afternoon, there was a police car close by who saw the whole thing and they refused to drive him to a hospital or arrest the chickenheads.

3 days in hospital, big operation to reconstruct the muscles in his upper arm and a long recovery.

Good story from the OP (well, not good, but you know what I mean); all very easy for us to say this and that in hindsight, but he'd been out with a girl, had a few drinks and just did the natural thing. Yes, in Thailand or anywhere you don't come from the risk is higher (that you just don't know the 'normal' situations and how they escalate), so best to keep out of the way if possible.

Generally, the world seems to be getting much more violent. 30 years ago, as a teenager, I'd get in fights from time to time, usually drunkenly at a pub, and all it meant was a punch in the face or two. Nowadays, even back home in North London, I suspect you'd get stabbed in the average pub fight - all very stupid and avoidable...
How do I post these pictures???

Chasing after a mugger for the sake of a handbag is just about as daft as it gets, no matter how sweet the promised pussy is, far better to consoles said pussy with a few there there there's and cheer her up with a little slam slam slam!

Welcome to the Buffalo Board...Thanks for your account of a nasty evening...

When I have time, I'll relate my encounter with two Thai mafia-wannabe corner boys...

And yes, in the shadows, you are fair prey anywhere along Sukhumvit in the wee hours...

Hope you recover fully from your injury...

On Nut is an ironic area to be attacked for this board...Members here fight to the death at the Beer Garden...Heads are squeezed like pimples and handbags swing...

I have time, I'll relate it for you.
"Boringboy had his man bag ripped off his shoulder by two passing Thai guys. He attempted to give chase flailing his arms and screaming, but his heel broke and down he went.
The boys returned and carted him off to a side alley where they abused him for hours.
He woke up smiling with an arsehole the size of a vintage golf bag."
Try as he might he could not find the perpetrators to repeat the performance.

Unfortunate story and hope you have learned from your experience. This could have been anywhere in the world. Dark, abandoned alley, late at night and drunk. Lots of red flags. I do not need to go into all the things done wrong here, but common sense will save your life.

Glad to hear you have recovered, since things could have been much much worse.

Glad you made it out of that situation, kind of reminds Me of that young English girl on an Island that got raped and murdered , the Police arrested Burmese workers.

I've done, what I thought was the "right thing" standing up for a dame and in the end she was gone and I eventually paid the real price.

I would NEVER attempt to catch, run down (or fight off) a mugger in Thailand. In almost all cases - they are working ALONE - they are their associates nearby.

Getting knifed or shot is a very real possibility.

    Best of luck to you.

    Thank you for sharing this.

    Welcome,

Yes you and she should have paid, got out of the taxi at your gaff, and let the other guy carry on. He would have saved 1/2 the fare and you and your date....

A lapse in logic and behaviuor bought on by a whiff of the barmaid's apron and of Sarah.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

More than stabbed... thanks to recent "progressive" immigration policy.
There are actual almost no-go areas now.

The words "my new iphone" and the sobbing would have been enough for me to walk away and abandon her as well as her bag.

One point, is that however much OP suffered, he was still incredibly lucky. He got to walk away from it. Much more serious consequences can and have occurred in similar situations....
