    R&R venue in Minburi area

I've had my nose to the grindstone for months & am beginning to get cabin fever. With my girlfriend now living upcountry, & me only getting up there once a month, I'm looking to make a few local friends.

I'm looking for venues of interest in the greater Minburi area - preferably within walking distance of the centre of town. I'm as green as they come & have no idea of good restaurants, bars, karaoki venues in the area.

I'd love to hear what advice the seasoned sojourners of TD may suggest.

Didn't know Minburi had a "town center".

^ The recognised town centre of this place is the main market, & end of Thanon Ram Intra - as far as I know. Most of the banks, pharmacies & so on are in this area.

Outskirt of Bangkok, continue on Ramkaenghaeng rd.

Almost bought a house there, but it's neither countryside nor city, an indistinct sort of place for commuters, was my impression. I've got a good mototaxi Thai friend there, how's your language skills, watterinja?

^ Thai language skills reasonable, actually.

Funny place Minburi, as you say. I have absolutely no real idea of the workings of this place, having been somewhat of a night-time hermit for the past few months.

Could always drop down to Bankapi for a night out, if you are into students' hangouts. Plenty of eye-candy for sure.

Bangkapi certainly does have its share of talented individuals.

Bangkapi has got some hangouts for sure... There's a cool Coyote bar on Lad Prao rd at Soi 138.

Shit, I'm 10 minutes from Minburi (in the car) and I don't think I've been to a single bar there!

^ That's why I raised the topic in the first place.

Pray tell, what R&R *is* within 10 minutes of Minburi?

^nothing I know about. There's a soppy massage place about 5 mins from NickA and Hilly's places, but as it is also my local golf driving range (or was), I won't be going there!

There's also a pretty crazy rock club across the street from Makro, next to The Mall Bangkapi too. There is new music there every night, indie rock, etc etc.

^ I think that's what it's called - opposite Tops. I think they also have Karoke there. I used to go for the golf driving range, but I moved on to the one behind the gas station near Carrefor

I definitely need to get out more...

Golf must be frightfully expensive, I'd imagine.

A more upmarket, discreet take-care type place would suit me. Something that appeals to Thais. I used to have the Ratchada side of things pretty-well cased a few years back. There were a few nice Thai-style hangouts with almost steak-house type layouts. Could go in and choose your partner for the evening. Was a lot of fun, & wasn't frequented by falangs, in general.

The mama-sans were a hoot & knew their job.

Driving range is very affordable, but real golf is where it adds up quickly.

Minburi has a pretty big Muslim population. Which probably goes some way to explaining the lack of fun nightlife.

Bangkapi even has a "red light" soi. It is across the street from the Bangkapi Klongchan post office on Sereethai rd, where at the foot of the soi there is a "Master" film developing shop. The soi connects with Sukapiban 1 also. I don't know the real name of the soi, but I hear it referred to as the "horny soi". Anyway, you haven't missed much not going there!
