These are 1 type of police - equivalent to Phuket jet ski operators. Avoid at all times. If you have to engage and they try to rip you off tell them quietly and with a smile to get fvcked or you'll fvck up their evening. They leave you alone - they are conmen and don't want to waste time dealing with people that won't take shit - they are there to make money.

Type 2. These are lone wolf type operators hiding under bridges and around corners. Another type of scam artist - often go for jackpot/side scam. Again - avoid. If you have to engage do as above.

Type 3 - Drug/Weapons checkpoints. The real deal. Go slow, smile, and obviously, - don't be avin no erb on ya. Northern western Thailand/Burma border.

Type 4.- Regular joe cop doing his best, sometimes manning a "left-side" checkpoint, directing traffic (uselessly) or manning a 30 year old speed gun. Humor these ones and pay your way (100-200bt)

Actually those aren't "police" at all. Your powers of observation are more than a little lacking.. They have a green armขpatch and DON'T have gunz. Those guys who sit at the card tables on the odd Soi side of Sukhumvit or in that little covered area in front of Korea Town on the even Soi side of Sukhumvit are bangkok municipal code enforcers or เทศกิจ (têet sà gìt). They're found in almost every touristy area and target foreigners who litter or throw down cigarette buttz.

I know the groups on both sides of the Sukhumvit near Asok. They're good guyz tasked with doin' a suck ass job of ticketing clueless foreigners who litter.. In fact after seeing the hassle they're given by foreigners stupid enough to litter in Bangkok, I made up and work sheet in english and thai so they could get the routine down talkin' to the errant miscreants. Since they started using some of the phrases it's really cut down the interaction and sped up the process..

They have several "look outz" too. For instance, the guy who cutz keys in front of the Bangkok Bank next to Chuwit Park and the woman who makes flower garlandz just past the Sheraton Grande. Both those people have walkie-talkies and radio in if they see a foreigner litter.

The real police don't give two shits that you've been caught by the เทศกิจ.. It's not their deal..

I've talked to them for many many years and drank beer more than a few times with them after they've gotten off work. Usually as I pass by I ask how the 'foreigner trapping' is going, if they 'caught their limit' (hit their quota), etc.

I was comin' out of the corner 7/11 one day and I heard someone saying "mister tod, mister tod". I looked around and it was one of the "thedsagit". I asked him what was up and he said they'd caught a foreigner who threw a cigarette butt down but didn't know what language he was speaking and would I help.

I went over to their little kiosk and there was a sputtering, spouting, arm waving french guy goin' on about some semi coherent rant about how he'd been comin' here for many years, how this was unfair, and the overall injustice of it all.. It was in such a thick french engrish accent I couldn't keep up with most of it.

I finally stopped him mid sentence, said, "Hey, can you throw cigarette butts down on the sidewalk in Paris?".. He stopped, said "No of course not." I said, "Yeah, you can't do it here either. It's a 2000baht fine.." He was so mad he just whipped out his wallet threw 2000 baht on the table and stormed off. The thedsagit were happy as could be.

Before you talk shit about those guys, you stand out in the scorching sun all day long watching dimwitted foreigners wander past waiting for one to litter! It's a pretty sucky job..

My advice, don't fucking litter in a tourist area!

Well done Tod - you know the Tessakit, guessing you run a few stalls eh?
However, for clueless tourists - police is a good general term.

Exactly - an extortion racket enacted only on tourists - not on Thais.

Right next to where they sell kiddie porn, fakes and other assorted illegal shit - but obviously they turn a blind eye to that - too busy screwing tourists for 2000bt a pop.

A while back, on me big moto, I miss the rama 3 exit and wind up at the toll booths. Knowing I can't cross the bridge on the moto, I turn around and right to figure how to back-track. Meanwhile 3 chicken heads come out and begin flapping their arms.
I acknowledge yes I cant cross the bridge and I was looking for a way to go back.
The situation began to escalate when one of them reaches to remove the keys from my ignition, I quickly and very firmly grab his arm and move it away, look him in the eye and say very slowly in English, "you no touch my motorbike". Then one of them decides to play good cop and offers to lead me off the motorway.
I follow his motorbike a 100 meters or so to an exit. I give him 100 baht for being a friendly sort.
Not sure what would've happened if I'd allowed them to take control of my bike, not good, me thinks, which was why I was forceful in resisting the effort to take my keys. Also they aren't used to resistance, they prefer patsies.

If they ever stop me and try to piss test me I'd say "fuckoff" emphatically.

This is the biggest crock of shit I've seen posted on a website for quite a while and that it should come from someone who really should know better is really quite depressing. You really are a a twat.

I lived in Soi 10 for two years and walked along the strip between Soi 8, the Tessakit kiosk and Times Square mall practically every day and observed those fat pieces of unadulterated shite fucking over countless tourists from just about everywhere in the world who dropped their cigarette butts not only on the ground but in between drain covers and amongst piles of litter and shit left by the street hawkers.

Not once did I see a single Thai being penalised for flicking their butts just about anywhere in the same patch and there were plenty, from feckless motor cy creeps, who pissed in plain view on the corner of Soi 10 and Chuvit's Park, to the mafia runners by Korea Town and the Tuk Tuk wanker pimps who stuffed their porn pamphlets in your face by Soi 8 every fucking day you passed, touting for business.

And as for keeping the street clear from litter?? Christ on a bike, every fucking late afternoon or early evening, piles of shit were bagged up and slung on the junction of Soi 8 and Sukhumvit to wait for the rubbish men to collect it at 0200hrs the next morning. For six hours, the rats and soi dogs ripped up those bags strewing the ground as far as the Bangkok Bank with crap, chicken bones and fuck knows what. Jesus, you couldn't walk by without gagging. Yeah, like the BMA give a flying fuck about street cleanliness.

No, those fat bellied Tessakit shitheads, in their fascist uniforms and gangster shades, sole function was to shake down tourists who did fuck all but add a smidgen of nothingness to an already foetid pile of ordure that is downtown Sukhumvit.

But, do you know what the real kicker was? There was one pedestal ashtray that the bastards hid by a tree so no one could see it and when they latched onto some poor sap who had dropped his butt in the road they'd take him to this and preach to him as well as emptying his wallet - at the end of the day they religiously took the ashtray into their kiosk to be locked up ready for the next day. Did they warn the tourists they saw passing and smoking? Did they fuck. One walked behind the target keeping a safe distance among the crowds and radioed ahead to his wingman waiting on the steps by Times Square so the poor smuck was caught in a pincer movement. And on a slow day the truly fat fucker would stand on the bridge between Times Square and Robinsons and radioed on if he spotted a likely target.

On two occasions I was able to warn tourists that they were being followed and to dispose of their fags by the Times Square smoking place. Fatboy Tessakit spotted it and since then every time I passed his kiosk I'd sawadee the fuck and each time he just looked away. My wife hated them for what they did and saw it for the cynical shit they represented.

No, Tod, stuff your sanctimonious claptrap up the old poop chute or save it for some Lonely Planet contribution. Those fuckers don't give a flying fuck about keeping the streets clean, they're just bottom feeding parasites milking tourists and getting fatter every day on it.

Out of all the money grubbing Thai scum I reckon those pricks are the worst.

Yea, I gotta agree with that.

The cigarette police are gonna clean up Bangkok one falang butt at a time and Todd's gonna help. I give this project a twenty-five century time line to completion.

Gotta admit at 2,000 Baht a butt its serious money. It'll be making a dent in Bangkok's filth any day now.

When I first came here 10 years ago a mate warned me before flying about this scam. Walking out of MBK a few days later I had a cigarette and noticed - amazingly - there was not 1 ashtray present for the million odd people that pass from MBK to the BTS a day. That natural break point was where all smokers would spark up before getting on BTS. Full of Tessakit hiding behind columns waiting for each one to - obviously with no other choice - as there were no ashtrays - drop them on the floor. 5 minutes later when crossing the concourse into the BTS they pounce on literally 100's a day and charge them 2k. Thats a 15m odd baht a month scam.

I threw my butt over the edge of the BTS railing. When they tried to stop me I said I wasn't a smoker. They said you just threw a butt - I said What butt?. As I walked past them one shouted - you go airport - go home your country.

To be honest - maybe I should have listened - too late now.

that just about sums up the level of sophistication and intelligence of many of the uniformed morons that run this rather silly and insignificant land.

I am sure this does not come as a surprise to anyone, but extorting money from the falang is a huge game enjoyed by all in Thailand. It does not really matter how they do it, it is succeeding that gives the adrenalin rush to all those who are Thai. From the bar girl to the police to the general shop owner, to steal money from foreigners is a drug that feeds their ever increasing addiction to this game.

There is really no way to stop this national sport and only by refusing to pay extortion money would you be able to deny Thais from their fix. To say this is anything close to a noble way of of making money is total BS. Anyone with the smallest amount of authority will be playing this game and later laugh about it when they boast to their friends how easy it is.

My New Years resolution is to not pay any tea money and if this means a visit to the local police station, then so be it.

I'm well aware in the more touristy areas and Bangkok, the farang is targeted with all sorts of scams- but there seems little to no evidence of that where I live in Isaan. The Police aren't greedy (so far)- 100bht seems to be the standard slush money, and even then they have to get past the formidable mrs sab, as often as not we don't pay a satang. The one time I got 'done' in Bangkok, the slush was 500 bht, b'stards (although I had done an opportunistic U turn on a 6 lane highway, having missed a tollway entrance)! The local cops rarely bother us with roadblocks etc, 'cus they know us as locals. Similarly, in local shops and restaurants there is no dual pricing. Markets are probably more of a dodgy proposition, but the only stuff I buy there is some prepared food to have with a beer- and I pay the same as the locals. Mrs sab does the rest of the shopping. Touch wood.

Hmmmm, Sabang we must be living in a different Isaan than you. I typically only buy items that are marked and sometimes I will try and negotiate a lower price. If the prices are not marked and they see that I am a foreigener, the price goes up. This is well known throughout Isaan. If I do need to buy something that does not already have a price tag, I send my Thai wife.

As for the police, it depends on where you are. In Udon, the police are not too bad and do not seem to target me when I am driving. Outside Udon is a different story. I was fined 300 baht for having a brake light out near Nong Khai on the highway and should have refused to pay. If I were Thai, it would have been no problem, but it was obvious they were targeting falangs coming back from either a visa run or shopping. This goes on other places in Isaan and all over Thailand.

You did admit that the police were only fining you 100 baht. What was the infraction?

Markets? They, naturally, prey on our ignorance- I leave that to mrs sab. But when it comes to a piece of fried chicken or other snacky prepared thing, I pay the same as locals. I live in Ubon- it's really not too bad around here, perhaps because of the relatively few f'rangs. I reckon it helps to be known locally, sure of it actually. I recall one place overcharged me for a bowl of duck noodles by a whole 10bht or so, it was a place we had been several times before but an old geezer was now serving. Mrs sab got on the phone and complained, but the old geezer lied and said he had given the f'rang a 'bigger bowl'. No biggie- upshot was we never went there again, and quite conspicously go to the duck noodle shop next door!

Wow, "Seekingasylum", don't hold back by any means!!

You goofball, they're supposed to target foreigners! That's their job in a nutshell. Of course their job is also to collect the rent money for the spaces of street sellers in their area (not to be confused with the Police who do that too), because at least the thaiz get a receipt from the Thesagit for the space rent they paid.

Just a question for you, my astute posting pal, what country is this? Last time I checked (which I do from time to time) this is the glorious "Land 'O Thaiz" or THAI-land.

Why would you even begin think that thaiz would be held to the same standards as foreigners here? What in your sojourns around the country or your time on Soi 10 would ever lead you to believe in nonsense like that? Still wearing your rose colored glasses hoping for the best huh?

NEWZ FLASH; You ain't in Kansas any more Toto! You're in Thailand...

The Thesagit aren't tasked with keeping the streets clean. That's the women you see in the green vests in the morning sweeping the sidewalks.. The thesagit tasked with issuing xx number of littering tickets per day to foreigners. Although about 6 months ago the municipal code in Bangkok did change and they can indeed ticket thaiz for littering (albeit at 200baht a pop).. They also can and do stop motos from using the sidewalk periodically.

Sheesh, of course it's a money generating totally unfair scam! Then again that's what countries the world over do; exploit and take advantage of tourists. The definition of tourist is someone who is transient, they come here, they tour and they leave. If there ever was a demographic which should be taken advantage of I'd say they fit the bill just fine!

Shout me down, I don't care, but those guys are doin' a fucked up job in a fucked up area of the city.

I only hope that the benefits as far as a city employee make up for the grief they get when they stop people..

Sheesh if they'd give me a walkie-talkie I'd rat out foreigners in a new york minute!

Just so you know; They now have a "new sign" in engrish (although it's still just as unintelligible as the old one). Now the fine IF you throw a cigarette butt into the sewer system via a drain or man-hole cover can be up to 5000baht..

That's because the women who sweep the streets every morning can't get it out of the drains, and we hafta wait for the prisoners on work release to come and pull those buckets on ropes thru the sewers twice a year!

Hey, you can't have it both ways.

It's either a fucking scam by useless fucks who add nothing to the equation except piss off tourists who may not return or they're doing a fine job, in intolerable conditions for the good of the city?

You're blowing it out of your arse and spouting hypocritical shite.

And that utterly total shite about throwing fag ends down the sewers needing to be removed is even more specious bilge, scarcely convincing even to a deadbeat, retard with a fucking lobotomy.

The fucking sewers in this rat -infested, cockroach ridden shithole are totally fucked up with all the fucking oil and grease the dumbo chickenheads pour down them every night from their filthy, crud encrusted food carts and street slumfest eateries.

And you prattle on about a few fucking fag ends thrown by the odd farang, you fucking moron.

Jesus, anyone would think you're up for nomination to be elected Thai arse licking farang of the fucking year.

The uhm anti-tourism facet of the Thai government. Tasked with undermining TAT's effort to improve tourism numbers.

Todd, do you really believe the shit you write?

Advanced Thai military operations James Bond style, keycutters and garland sellers armed with walkie talkies and radios (you forgot to mention the night vision goggles and FLIR units).

From the report provided by the upper echelons of the Thai criminal justice system as to why we need to address this hidden threat to the infrastructure of Thailand and why we must come down hard on these tourists who so whimsically abuse the natural beauty of Thailand.

Follow the progression; 2,000 Baht and Thailand is not one iota cleaner, let's try 5,000 Baht, if that doesn't clean up Thailand we'll have to get tough and come down hard to show them we mean business - raise the monetary fine to 10,000 Baht and add jail time with work release cleaning the sewers - that'll learn 'em!

    Time to build more jails.

They summon Tod who spits bollox at you and weirdly ends all his plurals with a pronounced Z whilst swivelling his eyeballs and stretching his KISS T-shirt. After enduring such a frightening experience most victims pay up.

Just a question for you, my astute posting pal, what country is this? Last time I checked (which I do from time to time) this is the glorious "Land 'O Thaiz" or THAI-land.

Why would you even begin think that thaiz would be held to the same standards as foreigners here?
Why on earth shouldn't people expect that?
What in your sojourns around the country or your time on Soi 10 would ever lead you to believe in nonsense like that? Still wearing your rose colored glasses hoping for the best huh?

Sheesh, of course it's a money generating totally unfair scam! Then again that's what countries the world over do; exploit and take advantage of tourists.
No they don't. When was the last time you heard of tourists to the U.S. being targeted for unfair treatment?
The definition of tourist is someone who is transient, they come here, they tour and they leave. If there ever was a demographic which should be taken advantage of I'd say they fit the bill just fine!
SHOULD b taken advantage of? Why 'should' they be taken advantage of?
    .

Sheesh if they'd give me a walkie-talkie I'd rat out foreigners in a new york minute!
Really? Why would you do that? What a jerk

That's because the women who sweep the streets every morning can't get it out of the drains, and we hafta wait for the prisoners on work release to come and pull those buckets on ropes thru the sewers twice a year!
'WE' hafta wait?... who's 'we'? and if you think a few cigarette butts are clogging the sewerage system you're demented.
Are you related to Fluke by any chance or are you just after his temple police crown?

NHow I must say I have encountered 2 decent coppers in Thailand. One was a few years back when I blatantly skipped a red light because I did not see it and the cop came to me, got my license, issued me a ticket and fecked off in about 1 minute. I was there expecting the long drawn out "suggest a bribe to me" routine but no! I was very impressed and was tempted to slip him a red note as a reward.

The other one tends the car park near to the market the missus insist upon visiting to buy food to stink the house out. He's brilliant, and I always seem to get special treatment from him despite never giving him squat; preferred parking rights, stops the traffic for my exit, all sorts which I don't see anyone else getting. He might just get rewarded with a bottle of something at christmas for his efforts.

    the rest are koonts.

You sound more like Fluke than Fluke does Koojo.
You do realise that Thailand has slipped back from a fledgling democracy with developing country aspirations, to a third world dictatorship. You should thank the coup for stripping away the facade of the real world reflected in all those shiny brand name stores in downtown Bangkok. Behind all the 5* hotels and glass store fronts is a backward civilisation.
Why would you expect to be treated any better than the locals emerging from the swamp? The General wants them to be more Thai, so things will only get worse.
Can't understand your concerns anyway as you don't even live here.

    to a third world dictatorship.
it never been anything more than that.

the fact that men in uniform can, against all the laws of the land, single out foreigners walking on the streets, intimidate and threaten them, search through their belongings and escort them to stinking fetid karseys in a run down petrol station and literally force them to provide urine samples for some joke of a drug test speaks volumes about the nature of the forces of "law and order" and those that control them in this pathetic country.

north korea, pakistan, iraq, russia, mexico and other backward corrupted shitholes immediately spring to mind.

My point was that it would be unreasonable for any farang to expect anything different.

Yes, and then there's Toddy, who not only doesn't expect anything different but supports it, that's my issue.
