Sukhumvit Soi 7 Food stalls - gone!

Been a regular traveller thru BKK for ten years or more, and always visited the Soi 7 foodstalls for a big seafood nosh-up. Its the best seafood in BKK in I reckon, but now it has GONE!! The whole area now in darkness and a few shops nearby boarded up also. I suppose this means the area is for redevelopment, but not completely sure, as asking a couple of people near that area, they indicate its all re-opening later. But not sure about that. Does anyone know whats actually happening? shutting down so many businesses in one place is a pretty big deal, It was a large eating area with 100 or so eating tables, and a dozen or so separate businesses, so me thinks some may have relocated to a new area nearby maybe? someone must know something.

I know one of the businesses had a very small online presence as I was once given a business card, but of course, I no longer have it.

    Any info mucho appreciated....

This was already covered on the tv forum. I have a friend who owns a barbershop in the corridors that comprise the entry to Soi 7 and she informed me at least a year ago, maybe 2 that the patriarch that owned the area was a) very old and b) quite ill. His family were just waiting for him to pop his clogs and they would be in like a flock of vultures.

Pity to see that area go, some places will relocate close by apparently, my friend... not, she will find somewhere else. Sad... she does the best pedicure for ingrowing toenails I have ever had.

Very interesting toslti. you mention a reference to a TV thread. Do you have a link?

Thinking about it, it is closer to 20 years that I'd been eating at that Soi, and many of the staff/waitresses there were proper friends.I noticed that the Pomodoro pizza place round the corner also looks dead and dark - another good local eatery.I had to leave BKK yesterday, and didn't really get a chance to chase things up. But when I get back in 3 weeks I will. If any of the businesses do relocate near-ish in the Nana/Cowboy areas, I'd like to find them. hoping ....

    thnx again for info

the removal of that foodcourt in order to redevelop the area has been a long time coming. it served mainly as a feeding trough for hookers and their customers. the food was overpriced and of poor quality, like most of the goods and services in that area.

next to go, if it hasnt already done so, i believe is the beer bar, the geriatric home, full of tottery old geezers, the motley crew of turtle necked, wet eyed old dreamers, sitting there necking beers with shaky hands, on display for the ever present grind of ugly chancer prostitutes circling the bar hunting for prey.

closing it down will be no great loss to bangkok, the old roues will relocate to nana round the corner or pattaya down the coast.

the sleaziness of it all used to be quite characterful, before the skyscrapers and the neon, but it represents a bygone era, one that has no place these days in central bangkok and is slowly being squeezed out.

i suppose it will all be replaced with yet another anodyne shopping mall.

Thanks toslti for the PM. Well..... woe.. looks like the redevelopment stories are true and its not just the foodcourt going, but a very large chunk of the nearby area as well. Bummer.

And taxexile, I refute your comments about the foodcourt quality/price: the prices were "about right" for an expat area, and the quality IMHO was always brilliant.

Well, next time in BKK (March) I will try and track down where some of the foodcourt folk have gone. It will need some detective work, but I cannot do it from here (UK). I hope some of them have relocated near-ish.

^^ unlikely, price in that area is out of control, selling dishes for 30 THB is not paying the exorbitant rents of those rich landlords

I suspect the whole block will go, they closed down the Italian restaurant too

I see nuch massage is still there Butters, really much of the area is shit, I'd like to see all the vendors of copied crap cleared away. The tailors on the corner of 7 still has clothes in it but the doors open most of the time. Worse is the soi 3 areas full of blacks and arabs, really disgusting. Walked down soi 7/1 on Sat, jesus the ugliest women I have ever seen and almost as bad as the ladyboys outside of nuch 'massage' The bj bar ladies sitting outside were just as revolting, to think people travel thousands of miles for this is really amazing.

Spot on as usual. 12 years ago the corner of Asoke was a large beer bar area, then you had Suk Sq where the park is as well as Clinton plaza and soi zero and Washington sq, all swept away as well as the bar area on soi 23. Bygone area indeed. Soi cowboy used to have shops and eating places like hare and hounds and the pizza place, and no neon. Now no charm left, all glare and expensive short time girls.

Foodland is really great value, you can get breakfast there for 59 baht if you go before 9 and some of the customers are interesting to say the least!
