    Overstay Fine

    i appeared to have overstayed by one day, i got to the airport and the biddy on the counter said, "overstay you pay 1,000 Baht " ok where do i pay, i asked twice, had the money ready, when i got to passport control i could see a piece of paper with "seat 40k Fine" no-one asked for the dosh, well my question ,FINALLY, is will they do me over when i return in April + interest or will it be forgotten, thanks Rolls. how long is the stay, is it 30 days?? yep looks like i was there for 31 days, well thats a bloody month isn't it ??

    Assuming you got an exit stamp in the passport.

    They normally don't charge you for the first day just put a stamp in your passport. nothing to worry about at all. i know a few people who have left with years of overstay and returned after a couple of days with a new tourist visa.

    Typically there's always been a one day grace period, after that the fines kick in, last I heard it was 500 baht a day up to a max of 20k.

    At the airport there is a day's grace, but not at land borders.

    The reasoning is that many flights depart in the early hours of the morning so someone who arrives at the airport on, say, 31st December, at the end of their stay, would be technically on overstay for 30 minutes if his flight left at 00.30hrs.

    Yeah I've overstayed a few times, some have been 1 day at land crossings and no grace, 500 bt fine. It should be 500 bt per day, and no dramas afterwards, they'll give you a tourist or Non-O visa with an overstay in your passport no worries. I think they don't mind too much as they are getting paid at a higher rate than any visa.

    I have just come thru border into Vientiane, with a 20 k overstay, ( age Alzheimer's what ever excuse I could come up with), just a comment from the official, long time, I paid my 20K and on my way, so now in BLD territory, in a nice hotel, opp the embassy my 10 year old daughter is reveling in the nice hotel, she came with me thinking they wouldn't put a 67 old and his 10 YO daughter in jail. would they? job done.

    Most times at the airport they give you a free pass on a single day's overstay. However if it's two days, you pay the 1000 baht fine (500baht per day).

    "peterpan" you didn't say how long your overstay was for but lucky you skated out before FRIDAY. That's when the new overstay rules come into effect.
    Here's the sign at Chaengwattana Immigrations;

    Now no one knows what happens if you show up at the border or the airport to clear an overstay of more than 90 days after Friday. The passport control people at all the borders have the ability to black-list (ban) someone but the big question is; what constitutes "turning your self in" in the eyez of the thaiz?

    Simply showing up at the airport to leave the country while on an overstay doesn't seem to me like turning yourself in. On the other hand showing up at the door of IDC and sayin' I'm on overstay most likely would.

    Getting caught out for some other b/s thing while on overstay will be the easier of the two areas to enforce and carries the heavier penalty, but again, let's see what's what after Friday the 29th..

    This would be the typical response for 20-year overstayers, though.....

    it was for well over the max and the new penalties are what spuured me into action, so getting it done was then the priority until then, fauck em was never really one to follow the party line, but that changed.

    Indeed. the only time I copped a fine was leaving a day after the date stamped in the passport, and they whacked me for 1000 baht. I thought the date stamped was the day I had to leave, but apparently you have to be out before that date. Either that or they wanted some cash and were tricking me. I guess that most people who leave on the very date stamped maybe are overstaying by 1 day and they get let off without knowing it?

    Permission to stay until xx/yy/zz is what the stamp says and means, surely.
