    Getting A Taxi From Departures

I have just read that turnstiles have been installed at (BKK i presume)? and guards in place to stop people going up to departures and getting taxis from there and basically not having to queue up and can negotiate a price, i always do this on my visits, can someone confirm this. URGENT reply please as leaving next Monday, thanks Rolls.

The local Taxi Mafia must be complaining, if they have installed turnstiles and guards! I remember the old Airport was contrived to make it a long walk, from arrivals to departures. A pain with the luggage, but worth it in the wallet!

    it was?

I did it last week as I always did.... like most airports it was a two story vertical journey with a short walk to the lifts at either end.

And yes, these turnstiles have been installed as asked.

I guess the taxi mafia below were fed up of the fact that so many people were by-passing them.

Next time I'll go via the car park.

I managed to sneak through a half-open turnstile when the guard was distracted on my last attempt at this... Guard started shouting at me for a short while but didn't bother chasing after me.

I will go the car park way next time.

I would just to let the Thai officials know that the "taxi mafia" cant win no matter how much they pay. This is what its all about. There has been no effort at all to speed up the queues at either airport if you want to take a legitimate taxi. The same said officials couldnt be bothered to do two thing at the same time. Close off access to departures but at the same time increase access to the taxi meter queue of which there is one for each entire international airport. Another case of nothing changes unless you get paid for it.

Well, in any case.....you know someone [or group] is benefiting in some fashion or another. I can accept the quasi regulations and whatnot, but a universal attempt at overlording is of sinister measures.

At an airport of this size and heavy trafficed - one should expect a free reign to run itself. For those who prefer a sorted officialness and regulated taxi service....there is that.

On the other hand, you can still strike deals with the respective cabby even if they are metered.

Do the guards at the turnstiles in departures prevent you from going out for a smoke, and make you go to arrivals to have one? If not, just tell them you're going out for a smoke and hop in a cab, as they pull up right where the smoking area is.

Yes...this is true. Certainly could be improved upon considering the percentage of traffic any time of the year.

Seems as every time I am commuting [arriving] into Swampy - be it 1AM or 1PM - that so-called "official" taxi jump-off stand is never busy. Technically, these taxis are metered, yet the booth coordinator sets a medium price......locally [BKK metro] or long-distance. All set prices can surely be haggered with the individual driver. Commonly done and understood.

A hundred baht note will do the trick.

A hundred baht for what? For you to answer the question I asked? Irregardless the taxi stand at arrivals only charges 50 baht to get one from the queue.

Sod the taxi's. I just go down and get the skytrain in as far as Phayathai. 90 baht (on the express), takes about 15 minutes. Handy for me as I stay just a 10 minute stroll from there.

Depending upon the time of your arrival, there is the bus to Pattaya and Jomtien for 134 baht. Leaves every hour till 8.00 pm I think.

Bus to Pattaya leaves till 10pm i know.

About going through car park building to take taxi at departure floor I think it's wrong as there is no bridge from car part to terminal at departure floor ?

So there is no solution ?

Not skytrain mate, airport link. Nice indeed, but as said before the stations dont match up with the skytrain or BTS.

    taxis

so the information i was given is incorrect then," walk to car park - get the lift- and walk to departures ??," so what is there to stop me from walking from airport and then hailing a taxi. why the fck would i want to wait in a huge queue, and when it is your turn you cant haggle because "a" , the driver knows you will have to accept, or go to the back of the queue and "b" the person behind will be a "newbie" and will pay the "mafia" rate.
