    bottoms up.
Oh for fuck's sake, Tax, they're normal people coming to Thailand for the first time and want to have a good night in what might offer them what they thought would be the quintessential Thai experience. To dine in fucking anodyne faux luxury eating sanitised fusion shit among a bunch of hiso chickenheads, dull Americans and Euro expense accounted bores does not qualify. My friend can do that any night of the fucking week where he lives. A slap up meal in a chain hotel might well be the apotheosis of high living for a dreary middle class suburbanite such as you Tax but some of us look for rather more.

I'm bloody miffed the Tawandang is subscribing to this stupid law. A night there seldom disappoints visitors and is always my default choice. Bugger it.

Agree the Tawandang is great for first time visitors. Suggest you rebook for Monday night. After a day of sightseeing, they may enjoy a quiet dinner somewhere else even if sans alcohol.

    herr gent.
Oh for fuck's sake, Tax, they're normal people coming to Thailand for the first time and want to have a good night in what might offer them what they thought would be the quintessential Thai experience.
tawandaeng. where did you discover that place? lonely fucking planet?

you gormless schweinshaxe, you dummkopf, you utter schmok.

    (note to self.
next time i want to give first time visitors a quintessential thai experience, take 'em to a fucking german beer hall to eat pork knuckle and drink weissbier.)

    thegent
    [at]It's clientele are 95 % Thai,[at]
dummkopf !! then why not just take your lucky guests to macdonalds, there are thais there too you know.

what are we going to do with you herrgent?

anyway, you probably dont know this, so read on, learn and inwardly digest.

in bangkok, there are hundreds of wonderful thai restaurants, not the ones in the inner city and sukhumvit, but go out to the the suburbs, especially south and you will find some truly remarkable establishments. they invariably seat hundreds if not more diners, have hundreds of staff and serve up delightful thai fare, good prices too.

not only that, you can take your own alcohol too. the seafood restaurants out past ban khuntien would make a fantastic impression on your guests, for there is nothing even remotely like them in europe, america or anywhere else. they are uniquely thai, bursting to the seams on weekends, the service is always friendly, the food delivered quickly, and a peek into the kitchens with dozens of cooks preparing, shouting cutting, chopping , slicing, frying and grilling the food would present them with a sight they would never forget. its an authentic down to earth asian eating experience.

the thais are there to eat, drink and talk, not to dance, show off and play with their phones. the atmosphere is noisy, there is no nauseating floor show or band to disturb, its food, food, food, and one of the few thai experiences that has not been sullied by commercialism, pandering or dilution. few foreigners there, but they are foreigner friendly, going out of their way to welcome you, the thais will help you with the menu, that is if you can bear to engage with them on your "thai experience night"

but the tawandeng as a thai experience, as an intro for first timers, you must have either lost all semblance of sanity or you are just joking, its about as thai as hamish mcbowels soiled and steaming underpants are fragrant.

what it undoubtedly is though is a place for middle class thais to go and pretend to be western, and for westerners to go and pretend they are "grooving" with the locals.
the place has no edge to it, its westrn, there is no novelty there for a western tourist, its a facade, its not german, and its not thai. its thai/german lite as seen by disney. as a portal for a first time visitor its both unmemorable and unremarkable, and the food is nothing special.

oh thegent, you have outdone yourself in matters of self delusion here.

but its not too late to change your sunday plans and give your guests a proper thai experience, and a good meal too. ask your missus. listen to tax, hes never wrong.

A slap up meal in a chain hotel might well be the apotheosis of high living for a dreary middle class suburbanite such as you Tax but some of us look for rather more.
if that is the case, then the limit of your vision is somewhat defective, why the fuck did you choose tawandaeng, forget your specs ?

..... btw, the lunchtime buffet at the landmark on sukhumvit is not to be sneered at.

Jump on the BTS and head for Bearing. Different province, no elections. Not sure about any bars there though!!

The other option is to take the river boats from Saphin Taksin to Nonthaburi.

Don't send him here you coont.

He hates monkeys or anything resembling anything Thai. He needs to be in his comfort zone between MBK and Asoke or even better between Nana and Cowboy.

Hmmmm..... Thermaes would be just what his casual acquaintances would probably enjoy , lots of monkeys for theGents to throw his bananas at.

My dear Tax, being amongst a multitude of Thai waffling down farmed koong, shitty farmed fish tasting of mud amid fluorescent lighting listening to their gabbling as they occupy themselves in what is their sole (excuse the pun) raison d'être fills me with utter dread.
If we wanted that experience I would take my chums to Dusit Zoo.
    It's a lot nearer.
I honestly think you have gone quite troppo.
Incidentally, from my research none of the big hotels is serving alcohol until 2400 hrs Sunday.
The place is dry. Tedious and stupid.

As an aside. Can anyone offer up a reasonable explanation as to why they there is a blanket ban on alcohol. I know they dont want the locals getting pissed up and voting the wrong way, but foreigners, they're not even allowed to vote, so again, why the blanket ban?
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong

No mate - as there is none

I just bought a bag of beers from my above coordinates - encrusted with ice. they don't even do that shit on purpose, the fridge is old broken and leaking and set on minus 50. The result however is more than genius.

    My friends have arrived safely.

I have arranged to escort them to Jattuchak market for the morning and thence to lunch somewhere among the denizens of Nonthaburi by the river which should be suffficient to satisfy Tax's demand we share a truly ethnic experience and, hopefully, a few Heineken kuat yai. Thus restored I have in mind a leisurely trip down river on the stopping boat to Saphin Thaksin.

Tonight we dine at the Vientiane restaurant Soi 36 Suk where they can trough some more Thai stuff with that added Isaan zing and where the manager has assured me beer will be flowing notwithstanding the embargo - he could be lying.

Tomorrow they can sort themselves out vis a vis Grand Palaces, Emerald Buddhas etc. but the evening will be at the German Tawandang or the Landmark ( 2 for 2 deal in the carvery ) depending on their inclination.

imbibing the atmosphere of bangkok can be a real treat for newcomers, especially after dark when the place really comes to life, the area from asok to nana along sukhumvit, including some of the side sois, an area derided and sneered at by so many, should be considered an unmissable experience for a newcomer to this city.
sleaze has its own unique beauty and character, and visual jewels can be spotted even in the gutters.

to a jaded foreign resident living in that area, it may not amount to much, but to a first timer it would be a feast for the eyes. at least thats what i have been told by western guests when i have shown them that area of bangkok. unforgettable vignettes have been imprinted in their memories.

daytime walks in the area betwen hualampong station and chinatown, and chinatown and the river , and the markets in the godowns near the grand palace recall a more traditional bangkok, again, unforgettable vignettes abound for the first timer.

hope you will let us all know how you got on.

Tomorrow they can sort themselves out
    mine host.

Soi Cowboy is also on the itinerary but time is limited and they have to get up very early Tues am. This stupid prohibition means the place and most others are quite muted in atmosphere.
