    Christmas getaway to Bangkok advice

    Hi All,

    I will be headed to Bangkok around Christmas time with some friends and wanted to know if it would be best to book a hotel and air tickets through a travel agent? As the date is fairly close and I don't have time to do research, I'm thinking this could be the best option? Any opinion is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!"

    Bangkok is a dump at the best of times. At Christmas and new year you will be eligible for special rip offs.
    Go to Hua Hin and get royally screwed instead.

    Sorry don't like cities at the best of times but high season is especially bad.

    Attempting to make travel arrangements from Europe, OZ/NZ, or North America into BKK this time a year comes with a caveat...

    The whole SE and NE Asian corridors are flush with fucking Filipinos returning to their home for the holidays....such a rush usually creates absolutely no seats available [a month ago].

    All this depends on your departure point and connecting locale.

    Apologies for my rural bias but Bangkok is a microcosm of all that is completely wrong with Thailand.
    The countryside has no need for bike lanes and hard shoulders. Bangkok pedestrians are at most risk from injury through damaged walkways, despite the atrocious traffic. And I'm a glass half full sort of guy.

    Why would they transit through BKK during high season when they can easily fly direct from almost anywhere on the planet. Got a grudge Jeff?

    If the question you are asking is. is it cheaper to DIY and book the flight then find your hotel when you get here, the answer is NO.

    heres one example from Ebookers.com

    22/12
    LHR-BKK
    return
    29/12
    1089 quid

    With hotel and thats for 2 people for the week(spitroast ? ) it is only 25 quid more

    Am I missing something ,where does it say travelholic14 is coming from uk ?

    Better stay in Bangkok over xmas ,as all the other tourists head for the coast, and it's quieter ,unless there's tsunami then the masses will swamp in.

    Direct = stopover.

    Non-stop = no stopover.

    You'd be very hardpressed to find a long-haul flight into BKK/Thailand without a layover of some sort.....perhaps, the exception might be from Australia and closer Asian points.

    Just arranging your assumptions [per usual] to fit factually.
    I do wish people people wouldn't spout wordly, as if they knew what the fcuk they were talking about.

    Sad.

    Erm pot... kettle... irony of a huge magnitude.
    How the fuck can you be so pompous and so wrong at the same time in the same post. Beggars belief.

    Listen very carefully dipstick. The majority of Filipinos work in the middle east. Direct flights with no stop over in BKK or anywhere else in asia are the cheaoest option for expats who actually want to go home at the most expensive time of the year.
    Most will go home during Ramadan when they can get cheaper flights.

    Yes you are. It's called a brain. Christmas and new year are high season for swampy with tourists heading for the Islands and, for some obscure reason, the city itself.

    Your time is so short that you better go to a really good/expensive travel agent. Travelling Internationally to SE Asia @ Xmas & New Years (& Chinese New Years/Tet) is near suicidal.

    Correction [again].
    The far greater majority of Filipinos are working/residence throughout Asia and the U.S.
    Not to discount their ME presence....but it's quite minute.

    I don't think they would come through Thailand though no matter where they are. If they wanted the cheapo options they would change in Hong Kong.

    Besides, the OP might be based in Chiang Mai or Phuket; never says where he is. Wonder if he posted his location on the other 500 web boards he has no doubt spammed that onto instead of jumping onto expedia or what have you to look and book. Couple of wankers if you ask me; which you didn't, but I'm sure you agree

    I think direct used to mean no change of aricraft and non-stop meant no touchdown before destination. Although recently I have heard direct being used to describe a non-stop flight.

    Thanks for that Looper. As it's Jeff we're talking about it's not in the least bit important.

    his one post on Flyer talk;

    "Bali and then Australia (from Hong Kong)

    Hello,
    My friend and I will be headed to Australia to visit some of our friends living there and wanted to stop by Bali since it is fairly close to Australia. Where do you suggest we go and stay..."

    On lonely PLanet

    "Hi All,
    My boyfriend and I will be going to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time and we wanted to know of any hotel suggestions? Any hotels you have been to and enjoyed, please let us know. Thanks for your time!"

    On Expat blog
    "Hey Everyone,

    My husband and I just got some time off from work and would like to plan a trip to Bali. This will be our first time going and we wanted to book through a travel agent. We don't have too much time as this was kind of a last minute decision. Do you have any good travel agents you suggest and any insights on hotels to stay at? Thanks!"

    on Fodors

    "Hey Guys,

    My friend and I will be headed to Bangkok and we wanted to know which hotels you suggest? This will be our second time going. The first time we went with a tour and didn’t have the best hotel experience. It be good if we could be around city centre area so it will be easy access to the main attractions. Is it better to book through a travel agent or book on our own? Thanks in advance!"

    Which all end up in an advert for.........DRUM ROLLLLLLLLLLLL
