Bangkok Restaurants with the River View

The first 3 restaurants are next to Wat Rakung Pier which is where you get off to go to Wat Rakhang Temple, these are on the Thonburi side of the river, yeah, tell me about the different spellings, I have no idea which maybe the correct spelling or whether they are both wrong, but you will see both.

Wat Rakhang (Bangkok Wat Rakhang Temple).

So the thread is to share those Thai restaurants that have river views, Chao Phraya is a big river and Bangkok is big, so must be thousands of these restaurants and quite a few must be quite good, lots of crap ones aswell but not a lot we can do about that, just avoid them I suppose.

First up is Supatra River House which is pretty high end, ie don't take your latest Soi Cowboy whore mongering quest there as it is aimed at a slightly higher market than that. Dishes start at around 200baht, many around the 400baht mark so it's not cheap and she isn't worth that much.

View of Supatra River House Restaurant from the river.

It often has cultural dance shows, the sort where they have clothes on, lots of clothes so may not appeal to some of you, but culture is good for you, even Thai culture.

I admit the next 2 Thai restaurants don't have that river view we are looking for, but it is only a few meters down the Soi to the river so probably still count, sort of.
This place is the RumRuay, open twice perday and sells many types of coffee, nice wooden building with lots of character.

Many hours were spent thinking of a name for this restaurant, in the end it was decided that it would be called Kuai-Tiao Khon Thai, Thai Noodle Soup, and it seems to have worked, place was pretty packed out for mid afternoon, also does other Thai dishes aswell as its signature dish of noodle soup, shall give the soup a try tomorrow if I get time.

This restaurant probably makes more money than your average Pattaya beer bar, know which I would prefer to own, and it aint a beer bar in Pattaya.

Note the picture of Isaans Favourite dish, the old spicy as hell somtam, go on Somchai, you want another plate of that shit through an eye of a needle stuff with a dead rotten crab in it? Perhaps they could be talked into a nice not too spicy apple somtam?

Got to love all that old wood, really gives a place some character, as long as it doesn't have insects living in it.

Don't forget to check out TeakDoors Thai Recipe section.

Bangkok Restaurants overlooking the Chao Phraya River

So back to the Thai Noodle Soup restaurant which doesn't quite overlook the Chao Phraya River but does do Thai food and you can probably smell the river from there.

A feast of Somtam, sliced pork, vegetables and a plate of boiled rice please, no, no dead rotten crab for me thanks.

Scruffy and tatty, just what you want in a nice traditional Thai restaurant, thats called character in my book.

Does need a wooden ceiling though, for looks and also keep some of the heat out, although it is set quite high, just don't look so good.

Here is a nice restaurant review, it is the Navy Restaurant (Wayne Kerr's Restaurant Reviews) which is right on the river front in front of The Grand Palace with views of Wat Arun across the river, great place to spend a beer drinking afternoon I reckon.

My favourite for taking visitors is at Phrapadeang. Sit on the deck and quite large ship come down river headed directly for the restaurant only to veer off at the last minute and go by.

Get there either over Bhumipol bridges or by ferry at Bang Na and walk.

Slightly further out is the very good Dairy Queen ( not to be confused with the ice cream franchise ) in Nonthaburi. Been here a lot and always had good food. Bill for two people eating 3 - 4 dishes with a beer will be about 5 - 600 baht.

Even further up river is the very well known Suanthip :
