I Love Bangkok

I really do, every time i go there it makes me appreciate living here in chiang mai so much more. So I wonder how many people on this forum live in BKK and why you would stay there. It must be either for business or pleasure right? But what pleasures are there in bkk other than the night life?

I spent just 2 nights there a few days ago and couldnt wait to get home to Chiang mai, as soon as i stepped off the bus i was so relieved to be back, cleaner and cooler air, friendlier faces, less traffic and just a better atmosphere in general.

So how many people here actually live in bkk and why; do you have a choice? If you did would you stay?

I do have friends that are very long term residents of the stinking cesspit and they feel the opposite way inclined.
pop up to chiangmai for a visit maybe once a year and can't wait to get back to Bangkok.
God knows what drives them.

I've been in BKK for over 3 years and I stay for the work - there's simply more of it here and the pay is generally better than out in the sticks.

But I agree that it's a place that has far too many drawbacks. The people are becoming far less friendly than they used to be, the nightlife is crap - then I think it probably always has been - but it does tend to be a bit cheaper than other places for things like clothes and food. Supply and demand I guess.

I have been thinking about getting out for a while, so this may well be my last year in this rather horrid city.

I lived in BKK for 3 years as well, the reason, work. I thought it would be hard to find work elsewhere also and it was, but it was worth it.

It could be because it takes a little more patients to find out the secrets of chiang mai and other provinces where in BKK there are no secrets. 555

I don't think you can quite classify chiangmai as the sticks Willy.


In my opinion there is nothing that you can get in bangkok that you can't find in Chiangmai (except that place with the glass ceiling on soi cowboy, i liked it there)... also it's all in a nice small area.

I never go out ever, i could be living in the middle of the jungle to be honest.

I lived in Bkk for 6 years. Loved it. Miss it.
But it was time to move on.

I worked in Bangkok for less than a year but that was probably enough for me. I needed to go there a couple of weeks ago to sort out some paperwork and found it hellish. Especially being stuck in traffic. I suppose it is good for shopping.

I now live live in a nice peaceful Thai village and this suits me much better. I sometimes need to hit Phitsanulok City for supplies but I always feel relieved to get out of it again.

I may need to move back to Phitsanulok next year, as I have a baby on the way and need to get back into full-time teaching. I will still stay here in the village at the weekends though.

BKK was fun for a while, but I'm trying to get out. I only work here for 4 days a week now before I head up to Ayutthaya for the weekends. I have a plan for moving away from Bangkok permanently in a year or two.

I've been in Bkk for 11 years and I'm happy here...more work than I can handle and at higher rates than in the back-o-beyond...

I went to CM a couple of years ago for new year...could hardly breathe with the smoke from the fires on the surrounding hills...

however, each to his/her own I guess...

Having lived on Phuket for several years I moved to Bangers with the idea of staying a year or so to check out why folks liked it. I found a neat apartment handy to everything and within easy reach of Cowboy, Nana etc.

After a year I had been to Suk. area maybe two dozen times and they were generally to meet folks or other golfers.

Decided that I didn't need the constant noise. There was nothing that I 'needed' on a regular basis that I couldn't find elsewhere. As I'm unemployed I can live anywhere, Udon, KK, etc. One thing I did check was avg. nightly temperatures and this place is at least 2 deg. cooler in the evenings. Other reasons are described on my thread.

MOved into the sticks and love it. Fresh air, a hell of a lot less noisy and much more relaxed life style.

We do make periodic/monthly trips to Bangers for meeting friends and getting a few things not available here. 4 hour bus ride and I'm there, as we will be on Saturday afternoon.

We bought a house in Nontaburi a couple of years ago, and have the best of both worlds - we wake up to bird song, have fruit trees in the garden, enjoy peace and fresh air, and have everything we need in the neighbourhood (partly thanks to Tesco/Carryfour/Homepro/etc). Yet downtown Bangkok is just half an hours drive away if you avoid the rush hour.

I lived in Sukhumvit for 7 years, and although I enjoy visiting from time to time, and sometimes miss the ability to walk/crawl back home after a night out, I would never move back.

Thank god, otherwise we would just call chiang mai Bangkok 2 and Ayutthaya Bangkok 3.
Maybe in 20 years other places like Chiang mai will need these things, hopefully by then there will be emissions control laws in Thailand, otherwise the moat will end up looking and smelling like some of the canals in BKK

I've been in Bangkok over 5 years this time and will stay as long as I've got a decent job.

I've always liked living in big cities but not having any green space is a real drawback to living in Bkk.

Its been 7 years since I've been up to CM. The last time I was there the entire night market was filled with Beer Bars. I've heard its changed since then.

Give me Oxford, Glastonbury, or Stratford Upon Avon (or a dozen or more places in the UK) for a historical day trip any day.

I don't get Ayuttha. I've spent quite a few days there, but its got nothing special.

No sea
No mountains
No facilities
No nightlife
Crap food
No character in the urbanised bit

The only nice bit is the unruined temples and going on a boat, but that is available pretty much anywhere in Thailand
