Rare albino barking deer born in zoo

Rare albino barking deer born in zoo

Bangkok's Dusit Zoo unveiled a rare baby albino common barking deer, the world's second all white barking deer, born from a common barking deer mother and an albino common barking deer father.

Zoological Park Organization director-general Sophon Dumnui said the albino baby was born at Dusit Zoo on April 7 but that the zookeepers were closely caring for the unusual infant until they were confident that he was in good health and ready to meet the public.

The father of the newborn albino deer is Petch -- Diamond -- who is also an albino common barking deer, he said.

Petch was the world's first all white common barking deer given to the Dusit Zoo, presented by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in 2002, Mr. Sophon said.

According to the zoo director, Petch had previously mated with his female common barking deer companion and had eight more-or-less 'ordinary' common barking deers but the ninth baby exhibited albino characteristics and looked like 'Dad'.

"They now have one big family and the newborn deer has an all white body with red eyes, and a pink nose just like its father," he said.

The Dusit Zoo is now housing the only two albino common barking deer in the world.

To mark the special occasion, Mr. Sophon said, the Dusit Zoo would invite the young people not over 15 years old to name the new white deer. Anyone who win the naming contest would get Bt10,000 prize money. The contest ends June 20. (TNA)
