Bangyai Night Bazarre .......... end of the line.

Ever sat on the London underground looking up at the route map and wondering what was at Ongar , apart from being the end of the line ?

When the new purple line BTS link is completed in 2014 , Bangyai will be pretty much at the end of the line and we are bracing ourselves for a deluge of curious Sukhumvitites coming to see whats out here. Well.....not a lot really. However , Bangyai marks the end of the metropolis and beyond lies nothing but farmland. As such, it is the shopping focal point for a lot of people living out in villages just beyond the urban sprawl.
To capitalise on this source of consumers , Bangyai Night Bazarre opened about four years ago and became an instant flop ! It never had a downfall because it never got that high in the first place. High rents ensured it was a still born child of some entrepreneurs fantasy.

Now however, things are on the up. Rents were cut by 50% and a flea market was established on the forecourt of the covered bazarre. Here you can rent a small 4 square metre plot for as little as 60 baht a night on a weekday.
Which is where started to get interested. I wanted to clear out a load of junk and Ms Bangyais sister was looking for a new career.

And that was it. We rent a patch several days of the week and although the money isn't rolling in, its a bit of fun and every little helps.

So......here is Bangyai , The brightlight of the west.

    Looking north

    Entrance to the old market

BB Market , on the forecourt of the Night Bazarre. This is where I drop the girls off and help them set up their pitch.

Their first time out, they didn't even have a clothes rail so it was done car boot style on the floor. No sooner did the clothes etc hit the deck than a crowd of other vendors snapped up a lot of stuff for resale on their own pitches. Selling secondhand stuff is all profit and on day one the put 500 baht in their bin .

I decided to stick around that day and try my hand at night photography. But first I needed to find the beer tent. And here it is , overlooking the market. 50 baht a large Leo ............... oooh ............ suits you sir.

But it was a bit early for that ( 4.30 ) so I took a 1 kilometre stroll up to Bangyai Square , a new mall that open a couple of years ago, that was and still is , a complete flop. Always empty they must be praying hard for the BTS link.

Some nice new apartments opposite which will be well located when the rail link arrives.

Inside , you never have to worry about the crowds because there never are any.

Despite the cheap clothes on offer .

The A&W is a useful edition to the choice of fast food available though , and you always have a choice of seats

Not much else to see so as it was getting dark , I headed back to the bazarre.

Here , things start to pick up about 6.00 pm.

Waiting for a punter can be a drag though so get on the blower to a friend

or have some chips from the chip stall

Overlooking the market there is a very good noodle shop whose young owner speaks very good English. Everything here is fresh and hand made.

    More to follow

Inside the actual bazarre , you can rent a small basic unit for 1800 baht a month. This is shortly going up to 2500. Whereas the outside BB market is thriving , inside its a different story as many of the outside shoppers won't venture inside. Most of the units are rented by vendors from the outside who only use their inside shops when it rains.

Back at the market, these days our stuff now has a rail to hang on. We have also started buying new stuff for resale which is a lot more difficult since the folks out here are very thrifty and won't spend big.

No wonder there is a shrine on hand to pray for help.

So.....after all the footwork, its back to the beertent for a cheap Leo and some feasting on eye candy.

Have to admit, there's a lot more to night photography than I thought and I'm not happy with the results. Still, will plug away at it until I can get some better results.

A huge Metropolis indeed compared to our 108 shop in the village and a few chicken stalls lurking within the banana plantations although what we lack in concrete we certainly make up for in snakes, rats and the like.

On rare visits to our nearest town however, i too like to browse amidst the market stalls, especially the ladies underwear section although not for myself i might add.

Very nice pics Bangyai, owe you greenie.

Btw, my own lady and her sister started their own posh stall 6 months ago and are doing rather nicely although early retirement is not, nor ever will be, a reality.

    Good luck to yours.

Nice thread with great pics as always Bangyai.

The popular Suan Luam night bazaar that moved to Suk 101 has never took off, with most of the metal shuttered stores all closed.
Maybe they need to follow suit

What's the deal with establishing your "pitch". Is it first come first served, specific areas marked out are the prime positions bartered on a term contract. What about costings of the various pitches, as some seem larger than others.

All the pitches are marked out on the forecourt. Many of the pitches are rented by the week ( 450 ) or month ( 1800 ) so those people only selling on an ad hoc basis have to take pot luck on the remaining plots. These can be booked from the site office from 1.30 pm onwards on a first come first served basis , 60 baht mid week , 120 weekends .

In fact , I just came in 30 minutes ago having drunk away a fair proportion of the takings in the beer tent. Naughty me . The girls selling the Leo just crack one open and fill a glass with ice the moment they see me heading in their direction. Maybe I shouldn't pick up the girls until they phone me ................ but where's the fun in that ?

To tell the truth , the punters here are all workers so tend to dress down in their leisure time. However, every now and then a real stunner passes bye but wouldn't you know, on those occasions I have no camera. Probably just as well as taking a snap on anything other than a long zoom would probably end up with the camera being shoved where the sun don't shine.

Ah.....my favourite subject. It's a little Sony H20 that I bought a couple of years back. Although it has fully automatic settings it also has manual options which I am still experimenting with. Only a couple of f stops though so a bit limited on that score.

I don't know why you are not happy with the results. I reckon you've done a great job. Sorry I can't green you, out of ammo.
