Hello again TD,
My wife and I are about to embark on our first trip to Thailand next month in mid-February. It's been a long awaited journey that was originally planned for November but got pushed back due to the flooding. I'm assuming all is mostly back to normal now, yes?
Going to spend 4 nights in BKK, then 4 in Krabi and then 3 more in BKK. In that time, we hope to visit the markets, malls, temples and enjoy all the interesting dining and nightlife that Bangkok has to offer. Also plan to stop by Ramkhamhaeng University for a look-see as we tentatively plan to move over and attend studies there later this year on student visas.
Chose the Woraburi Hotel in Sukhumvit and the DS 67 Suites for our accommodations while in the city. Both had good reviews and got a nice Ensogo discount voucher deal on the former. DS 67 is also located within walking distance of a friend of mine living there.
Still don't have accommodations set for Krabi yet, but that should be done in the coming days.
Have a question: I remember that Don Muang Domestic Airport experienced some pretty serious flooding damage back in November. Is it back to full operation now? If we are flying Air Asia to Krabi, would we fly out of Don Muang or the other newer airport? I suppose Air Asia will specify when we buy the tickets.
Also, if I bring an "unlocked" GSM iPhone 4, is it easy to find the appropriate micro-SIM for it there? I just pop it in and I'll have a working local number? Assuming you just buy "load" or "minutes" to enable calling and texting, yes? I'm just going off my experiences in the Philippines and from what I've seen on YouTube, etc.
My friend said its just as easy to take a cab from the airport to our hotel, and should only be around 300 baht. We'll also need to head back to the airport the day after we arrive to receive my mother-in-law coming in from Manila. I've seen and heard about the Airport Link train being a good option for such an occasion. The MRT and BTS Skytrain look very similar in operation and ease-of-use to the Metro and trains we oft-used in Korea.
We'll find out soon enough I guess. Just getting more and more excited about this trip to a new place. Hope to learn more helpful tips on here in the remaining weeks beforehand. Thanks a lot for all the previous advice; direct and indirect.
