I see them all the time in the stands along Sukhumvit 3-11- I've got one in a drawer someplace that I would imagine works (it emits an impressive spark and noise) but I've never used it on anyone or anything, and I'm scared to try it on myself.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Yep, I was gonna say what the first 2 posters replied.

I've never felt the urge, or been worried, by anyone enough to carry a firearm though

I saw one of the Black Sheriffs on the Berlin U Barn zap an old hobo and his dog with one, the old hobo fell over banged his head and sparked out and the dog jumped back six foot turned tail and ran off. Quite a bizarre sight really.

Don't forget they're illegal to carry and/or use in Thailand; especially for a foreigner.

How would they even enforce this law?

Surely the best thing to do if your pulled over by a copper for carrying a stun gun would be to quickly stun him. Especially if you're a foreigner.

Also work well as an ignition source for a potato cannon.

What they do work well for is in cases like rural Indonesia at night where there is a disabled vehicle partially blocking the road and they try the old "your money or your life" line like highwaymen of old.
Reach down, zap Mohamed Dick Turpin on the arm, he forgets all about your money and you can drive around and be on your way.

Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

meaningless except as a pricing point. cell phone blockers are illegal too and they are all over.

i wouldnt carry it on a flight, however obvious that point might be.

I just dug mine up (I haven't touched it in years) and it's charging now (if it will still hold a charge)- it's from China, and there are no markings or anything on it that indicate its power or voltage- like I said, from the spark and noise that I remember it emitting, I would imagine it's less than pleasant to come in contact with.

I don't think it's too difficult to amplify the voltage of a small power source, so I would bet any 'stun gun' type device will do the job it's built for.

They are very useful for reminding recalcitrant dogs the error of their ways, but I've never actually zapped one- the sound is the thing. The same probably applies to humans.

Years ago I had one. I plucked up the courage to try it on myself when I could tell that the batteries were starting to give up the ghost, but still had a little tickle in them.

All I can say is that it was a pretty dumb thing to do.I've had heaps of jolts from electric fences on farms, but nothing like one of those little buggers.Hurt like fcuk. I would hate to think how bad it would be if fully juiced up.
