Music you love, but which no one else seems to...

I heard a snippet on Thai TV the other day of the famous bit from Mike Oldfield's seminal Tubular Bells from 1973. The bit they played was famous because it was featured in The Exorcist.

Sent me right down memory lane, it did. Tubular Bells was one of the first proper records I ever owned (apart from Pinky and Perky's earlier stuff). A friend of mine played it to me on a tinny tape recorder, and I was hooked, from about the age of 12. No one else we knew liked it.

Anyway, a couple of years after that, we moved away from that town and I was all alone, The Only Mike Oldfield Fan in the Village. Ommadawn, his third album, came along, and I duly saved up my pocket money and got the bus down to Woolworth's to buy it. To say I fell in love was an understatement. I think I stayed in my room for the next year and played it non-stop on my old record player. Mum and dad thought there was something "wrong" with me, and considered talking to a doctor. No one else I knew had even heard it, let alone liked it. Then along came Thin Lizzy, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Led Zep IV and Punk and I moved on. Don't think I ever listened to Mike Oldfield again.

Until Thai TV. Just downloaded the re-mastered version Ommadawn and guess what? I've fallen in love all over again. It's a sublime instrumental album, hauntingly melodious, dark, moody and uplifting at the same time, with a wild variety of instruments, ethereal vocals and an orgasmic crescendo at the end of Part 1. Part 2 ends with one of the most astonishing guitar solos.

    Thanks for listening.

    A taste.

PS - whatever you do, don't listen to anything he recorded after 1975. You have been warned.

The snag with threads like this is they usually turn out to show that many others like music you thought only you yourself likes....as is the case here. I've been a huge Oldfield fan for years.

His first four instrumental albums, TB, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations are all very special pieces of music yet few have heard anything apart from TB.

I can't agree with your "don't listen to anything after 1975" comment though.

As Branson began to put pressure on Oldfield to produce more singles, the standard did indeed slip when, by Oldfield's own admission, he was just "churning it out" to keep Branson off his back yet, there are still some sublime moments from the remainder of his Virgin works as MO would work on one main piece and then just fill the rest of the album up.

Of his post instrumental works are side one of Platinum; Mount Teidi and Taurus II from Five Miles Out; Crises and In High Places from Crises; The Killing Fields; and Amarok.

On the whole his post Virgin work hasn't been anything on a par with his first 4 albums but The Songs of Distant Earth, Tubular Bells III, Tr3s Lunas and Mont St Michel from Voyager (a bit of music which made me decide to stay in Thailand after my first full 3 year contract was up for renewal) are all pretty good.

One big plus is that several of my long term girlfriends over the years have found Oldfield good middle ground between my Metal and her (in most cases) Thai Pop bollocks, so already I'm off topic but it's good to see another fan around.

Other bands...? well, few seem to share my love of Opeth who until their last 2 iffy albums were superb. Many people still find my love of Yes weird too.

My mate from Macclesfield put me onto them years ago at college.

"And I must be stuck, my feet already are, I must be lost, my feet already are,
And I must be fast, my feet already are, you'll soon be dust your deeds already are"

    Love em.

    J. Geils Band were one of those bands whose studio albums never captured the magic of one of their live shows. I like 'Live - Full House'.

A bit too 'industrial' for me, there's a Jap fetishist film called Tetsuo that's into all the wire and grinders stuff, as only the Japs could be, I'm more of a 'Fashionistas' type, as is the other half thankfully.

    But I digress..

The Rubberbandits..? I don't like it.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

Jonathan Richman was another one of mine. Couldn't really understand why no one else in the world agreed with me. Got started with Roadrunner, of course, but continued with his bitter-sweet little songs about love gone wrong, or love that never quite went right.

Love it. Poetry. In a good way.

    That Summer Feeling

That summer feeling That summer feeling
    That summer feeling
When there's things to do not because you gotta
When you run for love not because you oughtta
When you trust your friends with no reason not ta (nada)
The joy I name shall not be tamed
And that summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.

When the cool of the pond makes you drop down on it
When the smell of the lawn makes you flop down on it
When the teenage car gots the cop down on it
The time is here for one more year
And that summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.

That summer feeling That summer feeling
    That summer feeling

If you've forgotten what I'm naming
You're gonna long to reclaim it one day
Because that summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.

And if you wait until your older
A sad resentment will smoulder one day
And Then that summer feeling is gonna haunt you
And that summer feeling's gonna taunt you
And then that summer feeling is gonna hurt you
    One day in your life.

When even fourth grade starts looking good
    Which you hated,
And first grade's looking good too,
    Overrated,
And you boys long for some little girl
    That you dated
Do you long for her of for the way you were,
That summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.

When the Oldsmobile has got the top down on it
When the catamaran has got the drop down on it
When the flat of the land has got the crop down on it
Some things were good before and some things never were
But that summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.

Well when your friends are in town and they've got time for you
When you were never hanging around and they don't ignore you
When you say what you will and they still adore you
Is that not appealing, it's that summer feeling.
That summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.
    It's gonna haunt you
    It's gonna taunt you
You're gonna want this feeling inside one more time.
    It's gonna haunt you
    It's gonna taunt you
You're gonna want this feeling inside one more time.
    One more thing...

When you're hanging around the park with the water fountain
And there's the little girl with the dirty ankles cuz she's
On the swings, you know, and all the dust is kicking up
And you remember the ankle locking
And the way she flirted with you
For all this time, how come?
Well that summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.
You'll throw away everything for it.
You'll throw away everything for it.
    One more thing...

Well when the playground that just was all dirt
    Comes haunting.
And that little girl that called you a flirt
    Memory comes taunting
You pick these things apart they're not that appealing
You put them together and you'll get this certain feeling
And that summer feeling is gonna haunt you
    One day in your life.
    It's gonna haunt you
    It's gonna taunt you
You're gonna want this feeling inside
    One more time.

You like it, no-one else does.. that's the idea of the thread. Nice pics, but a bit tame, the first two were ok.. the man ones were a bit too ambiguous shall we say. Still I'll show them the other half and see what she thinks.
