Rainbow Six is a techno-thriller novel written by Tom Clancy. It focuses on John Clark, Ding Chavez, and a fictional multi-national counterterrorist unit codenamed Rainbow, rather than Jack Ryan and national politics.

The latest John Sanford book in the 'Prey' series. "Gathering Prey"

It's OK but the main protagonist, Lucas Davenport can run faster, shoot straighter than the US Ranger Vet he's working with. Easily put down-able. Two stars and that's a stretch.

The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures by Louis Theroux - son of Paul Theroux.

In his "Weird Weekends" TV show, Theroux followed marginal, mostly American subcultures such as survivalists, black nationalists, white supremacists and porn stars, often by living among or close to the people involved.
In The Call of the Weird, he goes back and visits his subjects from the documentaries to see what has happened to them meanwhile.

    Porno

    Novel by Irvine Welsh

3.7/5· Porno by Irvine Welsh ? Reviews, Discussion, Bookclubs, Lists

Porno is a novel published in 2002 by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, and is the sequel to Trainspotting. The book describes the characters of Trainspotting ten years after the events of the earlier book, as their paths cross again, this time with the pornography business as the backdrop rather than heroin use (although numerous drugs, particularly cocaine are mentioned throughout). A number of characters from Glue make an appearance as well.

The prequel 'skag boys' is way better.

The female character in 'porno' is really weak and the story drags badly.

    (Imo of course)

I gotta try it. I'm finding it way too hard to get thru Porno. Hope the movie sequel (called "Trainspotting 2") is better than the book.

I prefer Irvine Welsh's less skaggy reads, Sex Lives of Siamese Twins, Ecstacy, Crime, Bedroom Secrets of a Master Chef, Porno was good too

    The guy can clearly write...

I expected better... Obviously, the French cannot write as well as the British. Maybe I got hold of a poor translation (?), it is rather lacking in depth and style. But, on the upside, it was free by Kindle.

I like Sci-Fi but steer clear of 'series' preferring the classics to space opera, but...
I've been reading the James S A Corey 'Expanse' series and I'm up to the 3rd book.

It's a bit Clive Cussler in space, a cross between Serenity and Aliens, well paced and not too far out there... man has yet to go beyond the Solar System and find other civilizations but has colonised Mars and the moons of the outer planets, which are independent and factional from Earth... dropped into this is a protomolecule launched as a seed from a highly advanced civilization that mutates with humans creating a perfect weapon which sparks war in the Solar System...

Gripping stuff and not too taxing on the tech side, worth picking up if you see it

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

^ did you read this trilogy, however?

    From wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_trilogy):
The Mars trilogy is a series of award-winning science fiction novels by Kim Stanley Robinson that chronicles the settlement and terraforming of the planet Mars through the intensely personal and detailed viewpoints of a wide variety of characters spanning almost two centuries. Ultimately more utopian than dystopian, the story focuses on egalitarian, sociological, and scientific advances made on Mars, while Earth suffers from overpopulation and ecological disaster.

Yes I did thanks, a long time ago. One of the best sci-fi reads out there.
It's the sci-fi fantasy saga's that I don't get on with, I don't want to have to grasp endless new cultures and struggle with the pronunciation of unfathomable names.

My favorite sci-fi if I had to pick one.. The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester

The French write brilliantly as you will discover if you read Zola and Camus. Their works are free.

I am not advocating piracy but my cousin has 25,000 ebooks and she didn't pay for all of them. Actually, I'm pretty certain she didn't pay for any of them

^ you Welsh bastard, you'll be suggesting I read Dylan Thomas next...

    (not a bad idea actually...)

Edit: just spent $30 (including shipping to Korea) on that, but some books are worth having in the flesh - I hope that this is one of those!

    I'm not really into fiction.

The last storybook I read was an Asimov Foundation book over 20 years ago.

I'd already copied a quick quote to to mention Glue but STS beat me to it.

Glue is one of his best books and what most people don't realise is that Porno is actually a sequel to Trainspotting and Glue, with Juice Terry being the most favourited character from Glue.

The third story from Ecstasy for so hilarious I could barely read it for laughing at parts. THey absolutely bastardised the movie into and artsy fartsy piece of shit. What a let down.

I'm currently reading The Backpacker by the way. It was a panic buy in the airport, but pretty good so far.

It's a free download on Kindle.

This is just an easy read set of short stories; detective style stories.

Strangely, I'd never read anything of his before and didn't know much about him... After a bit of research and reading, I'd be tempted to put this on the GCSE compulsory reading list because it's such a good starting point for critique within a literary and social context; somewhere between a Charles Dickens and a Graham Greene.

Not bad to be honest, got a bit long winded and slightly far fetched but an enjoyable enough distraction for a day or so
