VINYL RECORDS ARE back in fashion in Britain, where they have recorded their best sales for a decade as devotees and new fans relish what they say is a livelier sound than digital formats.
The Soho district of London is peppered with small shops where music fans are once again enjoying the feel of dust on their fingertips as they flick through the racks of albums.
“They love the sound, they love the packaging, they feel they are buying something a bit more special,” said Neal Birnie, of the Sounds of the Universe shop.

Used to love going record hunting. Sifting through damn near every rack in the shops and record fairs looking for hard to find albums or bootlegs.

I can still remember where I bought particular albums even though I no longer have them. Same with books too.

I see Mangpong music store in Future Park are selling LP's. But where the hell sells record players in Bangkok?

for started it's a bitch to spell. , I always forget how ..

True they sounded great and you had something nice to hold and look at, but they also used to get scratched to fuck , the needle covered in fluff ,and they were expensive .

The OP article is a little disingenuous too, as they are comparing vinyl to the most compressed format - mp3.

The solution is to download Vinyl records ripped digitally but losslessly ie in .flac ,
that people are kindly sharing on torrent sites - they sound and make you feel almost as good as the old recoeds.

JUust search - flac vinyl - and the bands name .

And play them on free Foobar2000.

5555 have to agree....just snake oil sales...all very fine to have super duper metallurgy in the cable but the connectors are the weak link and the source of greatest noise and loss induction.
...... output is only as good as the input..nothing is for nothing.
..most recording equipment uses high quality transport media but inevitably a component of noise and loss is introduced..only active components can somewhat remedy the latter by regenerating the waveform/digits through error correction and filtering processes.
....money better spent on season tickets to live concerts methinks..

Was in Singapore a few years back ( forget the name of the tower with nothing but electronics etc) ... saw one shop that sold new old vacuum tube (valve) technology..full of audiophiles convincing each other that it was superior to solid state technology.

I still have all the vinyl I avidly collected as a spotty teenager. I love the hiss as the needle skates on the lead in surface and then 'pop's into the groove and crackles into the 1st track!

My original Garrard turntable, donated by an auntie and dating back to the late 60s, is hooked up to my German 1972 vintage Taiga 1000w-a 40w RMS amp and still sounds perfect (although I did replace the Shure cartridge and stylus about 20 years ago). The amp drives a pair of Wharfedale W40 speakers which I purchased with my very first pay packet at the age of 15 and which still look and sound perfect.

I like listening to old vinyl on old equipment. It is like drinking vintage whisky from antique glasses.

Not as expensive as the CD format that replaced them.. At that time record companies made fucking fortunes convincing people to re-purchase all their old albums again "digitally remastered" by some soulless git technician on a 100 track studio sequencer. On CD.

I used to spend a shitload of money on vinyl, tbh. Music and bands seemed a lot more exciting at the time. Then coloured vinyl hit the shelves as well..

Having purchased some of my favourite music in more than 3 formats already in some cases, I am never buying another record again. Ever.

All the Led Zeppelins, Best of Jefferson Airplane, The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, The Sound of Music (inherited from my father).

I dragged my vinyl around for the vast majority of my life before I could actually bring myself to part with them.

I did not play them but I loved having them, some went right back to when I was 17.

I did photograph every album I had before I sold them, might crank a thread up on that when I get back to Bangkok.

Awhile ago I came across an article reviewing audio cables in a scientific manner.
Results?
Some expensive cables were better than cheap ones, but not always.
Then he tested straightened out coat hangers which were better than all but the very best cable he tested.

^Surprising. I vaguely remember high strand count cables being recommended because, apparently, 'high frequencies travel along the surface of the cable', so it was claimed. If that is actually true then I thought a coat hanger would not score well. But it could be bollix.
