After much recommendations from both the web, this forum and others, I decided to break a habit and try out one of these BBC hard hitting dramas, starting with Luther, as I know that Idris Elba is a decent actor.
Series one, episodes 1 & 2
He lets a serial killing paedophile fall several storeys after a long chase, and the man is in a coma in hospital. Seven months later he still is. He'll be dead in a few episodes time, right?
Cops are called to a house where a mother & father (and the dog) have been brutally shot. The daughter (played by Ruth Wilson) who made the call is questioned and revealed to be a smartass, psycological annoying bitch who pretty much admits it, but for some stupid reason is allowed free to then bombard Luther with calls and even assault his wife. Surely she'll now be arrested and charged with assault then murder? Negative. She's still free, continuing to bait Luther with stupid calls and then break into his wifes house again.
She was one of the reasons why, during episode 2, I became bored and felt this drama was slowly already disappearing up its own arse. Trying to be too clever.
I will persist with the rest of series one as I've read that it improves over the last 4 episodes.
Highlight so far was the appearance of Sean Pertwee, who would have made an excellent cop in this series, rather than the mockney female cop who's in charge of Luther and her team. Where is she meant to be from, London? What a joke.
And, I know British police don't carry guns, but why did it take 15 minutes for armed officers to turn up when Luther went confront the cop killer during episode 2?
Plot holes, continuity, Ruth Wilsons character and a duff script have spoiled it so far. Shame because I know Idris Elba can do much better.
