Julian, a drug-smuggler in Bangkok sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's death.

After polarising critics at Cannes last month, Nicolas Winding Refn's violent Only God Forgives has surprisingly won the Sydney Film Festival's competition.

A jury headed by Hugo Weaving has awarded the $60,000 Sydney Film Prize for "courageous, audacious and cutting-edge" cinema to the neon-lit revenge drama set in Bangkok's dangerous underworld.

Ryan Gosling plays a drug-dealing owner of a Muay Thai boxing club, with Kristin Scott Thomas as his acid-tongued mother who wants revenge for the killing of her oldest son.

After a low-key reception when it screened as the final film in the competition, Only God Forgives was considered an outsider to win against Kim Mordaunt's Australian drama The Rocket, Sarah Polley's revealing family documentary Stories We Tell and Haifaa Al Mansour's Saudi Arabian drama Wadjda.
