Kapamilya shows go international

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino television is set to conquer Thailand for the first time as another Kapamilya series goes international.

Joining the ranks of internationally aired ABS-CBN programs, the Angel Locsin-Piolo Pascual fantasy-drama series "Lobo" is set to air in Thailand this later this year, ABS-CBN’s International Distribution Division (IDD) announced on Monday.

Originally aired in 2008 on the Kapamilya network's primetime block, "Lobo" is the first Filipino series to air on Thai television.

Over the years, ABS-CBN's drama series have been dubbed in English, Khmer, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, Vietnamese, Turkish, Russian, and French. They have also been subtitled in Bahasa Melayu and Romanian.

"Tayong Dalawa" was the first Pinoy-made show to be aired in Singapore. The 2010 series starring Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu was titled "The Two of Us" for its international airing.

In Malaysia, the onscreen tandem of Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales was also a big hit. After "Pangako Sa'yo," which was originally aired in 2000 on ABS-CBN, the former real-life sweethearts' reunion soap "Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas" ("Timeless") garnered remarkable TV ratings among Malaysian audiences.

According to IDD, the series' Malaysian TV run even rated higher than the United States hit action-drama series "Smallville."

The acclaimed "fashion-serye" starring Gretchen Barretto and Bea Alonzo has likewise picked up a sizeable following among French-speaking territories. It is currently being aired ad "Rivals," and is steadily gaining viewers, IDD said.

Meanwhile, another timeless rivalry continues to captivate viewers across Asia.

In Cambodia, the 2010 remake of the ABS-CBN drama series "Mara Clara" also enjoyed its international run. A YouTube video of the show's Cambodian dub has even gone viral online.

Elsewhere in the country, the Cambodian Television Network (CTN) is set to film a remake of "Pangako Sa'yo" -- a first-of-its-kind feat for Philippine television. According to CTN, it is set to start production on the local adaptation in early 2013.
