Sir Paul McCartney : Officer of the Legion of Honour

Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney accorded France's top award
    Saturday 8 September 2012

    Former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney
    (SABC)

Sir Paul McCartney was presented with France's highest decoration in France today. President Francois Hollande pinned the Legion of Honour on the former Beatles' jacket, who looked quite pleased with this new accolade.

McCartney was made an officer of the Legion of Honour, France's highest public distinction which has been awarded to the likes of actor, Clint Eastwood and singer, Liza Minnelli.

Created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, and symbolised by a red lapel thread, the Legion of Honour has three grades, Chevalier, Officer, and Commander.

The honour carries social status but no money, and recipients have to buy their own medal from a licensed jeweller, with prices ranging from 169 to 700 euros ($210 to $880) for the highest rank.

McCartney, 70, is considered by many to be one of the most influential songwriter in the history of popular music. He has already been awarded a knighthood by Britain's Queen Elizabeth, whom he recently serenaded, along with tens of thousands of spectators, at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

He first rose to international fame with The Beatles, co-authoring songs such as "Yesterday" and "Hard Day's Night" alongside band mate, John Lennon, and then went on to forge a solo career, forming the band Wings, with his first wife, Linda.

He and Ringo Starr are the only remaining members of The Beatles.

The medal is a five-sided double-pointed star shape and is made of white enamel. It is encircled by a green wreath of oak and laurel leaves and surmounted by a similar yet smaller wreath. The star and the red ribbon have never changed.

Originally, the medal featured the profile of Napoleon on the front and the eagle on the back. This was changed under the Restoration to Henry IV and three fleurs-de-lis. Two tricolour flags were replaced by the royal insignia.

The head of “Marianne”, symbolic figure of the Republic, has appeared on the front of the medal since 1870, with the tricolour flags on the back.

On the front of the medal is the inscription “Republique Francaise” (French Republic) and inscribed on the back is “Honneur et Patrie” (Honour and Fatherland).

He's become a bit corny recently but what a career. He and his 3 mates changed the world in the 1960s. Their music will still be with us in 100 years time. A great Briton.

Hes not the nicest person in the world, being a bully, insincere and vindictive.

But for about ten years he was an extraordinarily wonderful songwriter.

A great songwriter and gifted musican certainly but one wonders with all that fame and fortune why he would want to tie himself to a one legged woman.

Kids of today just love those 60's songs. I was fortunate enough to grow up when Lennon/McCartney were doing their thing. Great times.

Whilst McCartney was a fantastic songwriter I often wonder if he and the other Beatles could have made it without John Lennon's amazing particularly early years influence.

I also blame him for the break-up of the Beatles.

If I remember correctly it was Paul's insistence regarding some commercial business terms during the running of Apple records which pissed all the other Beatles off.

In fact Paul was already writing his new bubble gum corny music for other bands he introduced under the Apple Label such as this song during the break up period.

He's an insufferable prick. He made some good tunes in the 60's and has hung around like a stale fart ever since producing absolutely nothing noteworthy.

True that he been a great contibitour to world music for decades but i, and many that i know think he has his head up is ass and is so full of his own persona that he is a cock.
Humility with talent is massive - David Bowie, Jimmy Page, Neil Young, all superb talents without the - 'me how great am i ?'
He doesn't dye his hair you know that ?

'Yellow Submarine' and 'The Frog Chorus' were also not particularly pleasant. My children liked them although things have changed since maturity kicked in

No need to apologise, i saw them live in Leicester in the late 70's doing their 'Band On the Run' tour and they were brilliant, Denny Laine was the standout act though.
Just a shame that Saint Paul has his head so far up his own ass these days.
