Director Tony Scott Commits Suicide at Age 68

LA's Daily Breeze is reporting (and now confirmed by other outlets) that director Tony Scott jumped to his death on Sunday from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island.

According to the Los Angeles County coroner's officials, Scott (68) climbed a fence on the south side of the bridge's apex and leapt off "without hesitation" around 12:30 p.m.

A suicide note was found inside Scott's black Toyota Prius, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jennifer Osburn.

Scott is known for directing such films as Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder, The Last Boy Scout, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 123 and most recently, Unstoppable.

Scott and his older brother, Ridley Scott, also produced films and such TV dramas as "Numb3rs" and "The Good Wife." The pair recently wrapped "Coma," a four-hour, two-night medical thriller starring Ellen Burstyn set for release next month on A&E.

    Damn good movie.

There is an old saying- 'money doesn't make you happy, but it sure makes the misery easier to bear'. Why would a bloke like that commit suicide? More to come out, I daresay. RIP.

Its hard to fathom why these highly successful people top themselves.

All I can say is that if they had to live a normal life like the rest of us they would of done it a long time ago.

Foked if I know whats going on.

too much drug taking and too much drinking can create depression,

living in Hollywood with that kind of diet can lead to suicide for some,

A few watchable movies in there.

Jumping is not the way I would do it. I think you would have to be pretty tormented psychologically to choose such a terrifying and dramatic exit.

I heard he had in inoperable brain tumour. I'll try and find the source.

edit: I read that on another forum, the poster didn't leave a link so maybe take that with a pinch of salt for the time being.

Not to make light of a tragedy, but I'd seriously consider my future if I was having to drive a Prius.

He was never nominated for an Academy Award and received little critical praise.

    According to his brother Ridley:
"Tony had wanted to do documentaries at first. I told him, "Don't go to the BBC, come to me first." I knew that he had a fondness for cars, so I told him, "Come work with me and within a year you'll have a Ferrari." And he did.

San Pedro? What a manky section of LA. Probably down there buying bath salts.

Probably related to a terminal illness.
