    Exceptions to the Rule

There is often discssion on black or white influences on music,ie who started what or where did it come from. For me Soul is black & Rock is white but what about crossovers?

Thats to get the ball rolling

Rock, as I know it, is a white cultural mix of jazz, blues and classical music, while black music gave us jazz and blues, lower swinging notes accompanying jazz.
Cocker's a good example of evolved rock music, moving away from the influence of jazz.

I'm only going to say this once.
Jazz is not, never has been or ever will be music.

    That's a very ignorant attitude.
The fact that 'in your opinion' its not music doesn't make it (not) so.
So what style is, was, and will be, music (to YOUR ears)

I'll listen to anything as long as it is not jazz.Hell I'll even listen to you keep time tapping your empty head with a stick if it's done with rythym.

Rock and roll (50's and 60's) is basically blues (3 chords, set pattern, all songs with same pattern, just different speeds and keys)

Rock music is more varied, with a strong beat but still mostly 3 chord songs

Bluegrass is southern rock played as fast as can be, usually with a banjo, fiddle, and if you're lucky, a washtub bass.

Jazz is basically blues with complicated chord patterns and everyone just playing solos (sometimes all at once which makes it really hard to listen to)

Soul is rock with more feeling. Mostly by black musicians.

    Elevator music is simplified jazz.

Reggae is a different beat, with more spaces and takes a real feel to play it and brings a more relaxed mood.

Rap is usually a drum (machine) playing with someone talking some degrading crap and using a lot of 4 letter words (but very danceable)

Techno has that driving bass drum beat going all the time and gets on your nerves after a while.
    Same with House.

All in all, reggae is probably the best IMO as it's the mood it puts you in.
Rock comes in 2nd with rap and jazz being last.

I'm sure I missed a few and not sure what you call the latest craze with Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber or Jesse J. I don't really listen to that stuff much but used to like to watch Britney.

I do like to keep an open mind and can now (finally) put up with rap. (but jazz is tougher)

Just because you don't want to listen to it doesn't make it not music.
    jaz has great rythm.
You're probably thinking about that freestyle crap that they make up as they go along that makes you want to shove the trombone down that guys throat.
But it's still music to some people.
