My first thought was the Ballad of the Green Beret, too.

10,000 Maniacs - GunShy. Good lyrics.

Song from a sister's point of view.

    Allow me.

I was about to send you a couple of reds, but thought I'd watch the vid first - liked that a lot!

You've got the shorts, the dancing, the haircuts, the lyrics and then the lovely catchy little tune. This could be the thread winner. BTW, the judging panel consists of me.
How do I post these pictures???

Loopers choice of a Steve Earle song reminded me of this one. One of his best. I'll include the lyrics for the folks that are too lazy to give it a listen.

    Beggin’ your pardon there stranger
You look like you’re new to this town
We’re a long way away from the beach here
You won’t see many gringos around
Well I come from West Colorado
And I’ve wandered this world far and wide
I’ve lived for some years in the shadows
And my eyes are unused to this light
If you buy me a strong drink of whiskey
I will tell you the tale of my life
It’s long and it’s sad but it fits me
And it may bring a tear to your eye

All the men of my family were solidiers
The hard fightin’ straight talkin’ kind
When my turn came all that was over
But I’d already made up my mind
I was there when we blew though Grenada
And I still have to ask myself why
Then we took down that fool Noriega
That’s where I caught the good colonel’s eye
Well he asked me if I loved my country
And before I had time to reply
He regaled me with tales of past glories
I believed every one of his lies

So I left my old life behind me
Turned my back on my family and friends
And I did everything that they asked me
And I lost some sleep now and again
And I lived like a thief and assassin
    I smuggled their poisons sometimes
Until I asked the wrong question in passin’

And the colonel himself dropped the dime
So if you’re ever in west Colorado
Tell the folks in Durango goodbye
There’s a price on my head and I can’t go
So I’ll just wait around here ‘til I die

The Wild Magnolias - Corey Died On The Battlefield

I don't suppose too many of you have heard this one, it's a 70's Soul/Funk track.

This Youtube video plays a bit fast btw.

Accepted because I like that tune/group; actually, had a g/f who used to love shagging to that album, but that's another thread...

There's a few songs by Stiff Little Fingers about soldiers, regular and para-military. Unsurprising as they grew up in Northern Ireland, theirsongs are generally against military values.

Tin Soldiers has been mentioned, Straw Dogs is another.
One of my favorites is Wasted Life.

    I could be a soldier
Go out there and fight to save this land
    Be a people's soldier
    Paramilitary gun in hand
    I won't be no soldier
    I won't take no orders from no-one
    Stuff their fucking armies
Killing isn't my idea of fun

    (Chorus)
    They wanna waste my life
    They wanna waste my time
    They wanna waste my life
    And they've stolen it away

    I could be a hero
Live and die for their 'important' cause
    A united nation
Or an independant state with laws
    And rules and regulations
That merely cause disturbances and wars
That is what I've got now
All thanks to the freedom-seeking hordes

    (Chorus)

I'm not gonna be taken in
They said if I don't join them I just can't win
I've heard that story many times before
And every time I threw it out the door

Still they come up to me
With a different name but same old face
    I can see the connection
With another time and different place
They ain't blonde haired or blue eyed
But they think that they're the master race
    They're nothing but blind facists
Brought up to hate and given lives to waste
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

    "The Grave" by Don McLean

The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colors
And the brown earth bleached white
At the edge of his gravestone
    He's gone

When the wars of our nation did beckon
The man, barely twenty, did answer the calling
    Proud of the trust
That he placed in our nation
    He's gone

    But eternity knows him
And it knows what we've done

And the rain fell like pearls
On the leaves of the flowers
    Leaving brown, muddy clay
Where the earth had been dry

    And deep in the trench
    He waited for hours
As he held to his rifle
    And prayed not to die

    But the silence of night
    Was shattered by fire
    As the guns and grenades
    Blasted sharp through the air

    One after another
    His comrades were slaughtered
    In the morgue of marines
    Alone, standing there
    He crouched ever lower
    Ever lower, with fear
    They can't let me die
They can't let me die here!

    I'll cover myself
With the mud and the earth
    I'll cover myself
    I know I'm not brave!

    The earth, the earth
    The earth is my grave.

The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colors
And the brown earth bleached white
At the edge of his gravestone
    He's gone
