‘Film on the Rocks Yao Noi’

Architect Creates Floating Auditorium, To Watch Movies In The Sea
    Mar 28, 2012

German-born and Beijing-based architect Ole Scheeren created a floating auditorium where guests could watch movies in the sea, on rafts in the middle of quiet waters.

The ‘Archipelago Cinema’—made for Thailand’s ‘Film on the Rocks Yao Noi’ Festival—is a large raft built out of recycled materials, inspired by floating lobster farms of fishermen.

It floats on the sea in the middle of the Nai Pi Lae lagoon on Kudu Island.

On the last night of the festival, guests were taken by boats through the darkness, to arrive in the middle of quiet waters in front of the glowing auditorium.

The audience could watch films, while surrounded by a landscape of rocks, sea and sky.

“The thought of watching films here seemed surprising,” Ole Scheeren said. “A screen, nestled somewhere between the rocks. And the audience… floating… hovering above the sea, somewhere in the middle of this incredible space of a lagoon, focused on the moving images across the water: a sense of temporality, randomness, almost like driftwood.”

“Or maybe something more architectural: modular pieces, loosely assembled, like a group of little islands that congregate to form an auditorium.”

A great experience, but not for one who’d get seasick.
