Here's a company that responds and I have not seen them mentioned here in this thread. I am looking into the water piping system. I got a ton of info in a matter of minutes last night about the pipes. Check it out.

I have just received the costs for the solar panels and tanks

the small version is approx B125K!!! and the medium B160K

slightly more than the B32k they were at Global House

I am awaiting the pipe costs with trepidation

They use a lot of them out here Dr A. In Kimchistan.

Big fuckers they are too. Must be 2m2 heating area with dirty great big tanks stuck on the roofs.

If I remember I will snap some shots of them

Like that but usually bigger, I've been quite surprised by how large they make them. Also thought it a bit strange for being a fairly cold country for three months of the year

Jeez! Unless you have an overriding urge to save the planet from global warming, suggest you do an ROI calculation.

Will probably take about 60 years of electricity cost to reach a break even point!

    yeah, exactly, not worth it

I had a small one built by a friend for B20k, it works OK, but not wonderful in cloudy weather. Prob also needs a bigger tank for more than two p[eople

I will have to see if Global House gets resurrected soon in CM

the tanks can crack, on some systems, if they are connected to the usual on-demand pumps, due to the constant pressure variations

That price sounds way to much.

Which company was that from ?

There is a solar hotwater company with a shop down the road from us, i will get their number for you.

I run a" Solahart" 200ltr hws on my roof .The system is run off the mains h2o supply so is under some pressure ,and after 12 years use I have only just had the inlet cock and pressure outlet valve die due to minerals build up -both are ruggered copper units as the system often boils and will dump some excess h20 (or the system could explode.) Cannot imagine a system using plastic components as they would get cooked.
The tank has a replaceable sacrificial anode in it and this is supposed to be replaced each service (5 years?) , it helps stop tank break downs so I'm told ,altho I have never had mine done.
This brand and a heap of others are made by the same company -was originally an Aussie outfit but now owned by the Malaysians and are available around Thailand

polybutalyde or some such name, I think

same as used for hot water piping

it is a plastic, but specialised

    the Solahart site looks promising

and thanks Marmite, you could check for me at GH

    Dr Andy,
I did not mention that our system puts out more than enough hot water for the 2 of us plus the odd blow in that I sometimes cover the collecting panel in light guage shade fabric during the hotter months,if not the thing tends to send run far too hot for us.
In places like BKK with the smog levels ,I think that things may be a bit different but these systems can put out good warm h2o by just contact with the hot air outside .
Lots of them can be seen on roofs in the big smoke( hotels) and most people presume the collectors are for photo voltaic panels

Andy, I was at Global House yesterday and looked at a couple of units they have. FYI:

    165 litre model - 39,000 baht
    200 litre model - 49,000 baht

Here is a link to a US Gov site that explains the different types of solar heater technology and also a guide to computing total costs one way or the other. I am quite interested in the cost and upkeep side of the question. EERE Consumer's Guide: Solar Water Heaters
