Obama is the once in a generation polician: articulate, well-read, smart, pragmatic, a great orator, and has an ability to resonate with people.
Additionally, he's got a unique background.

A white man with Obama's credentials and above qualities I noted above would have
gotten more votes and beaten McCain by a wider margin.
We'll see how Obama does. I think he's the best candidate out of all of the candidates of both parties for this election.
