    Big Bloody Bats

Right, need some help here guys; got a bet with a co-worker.

I live just of the Sathorn Road, and in the past few weeks I've seen bats after dusk that are fcuking huge from wing to wing; I reckon about a metre easily.

Has anyone seen these in Bangkok before and if so can you identify the things for me, I've searched the net and can't find any conclusive evidence of these bats in bangkok and need some leads to provide solid evidence.

He thinks I'm hallucinating, now I'm starting to think that. Like the opening scene of Fear and Loathing sort of trip.

    Ta,

    Pot.

They're Siamese Brain Bats. They have a single long hollow fang which they use to inject an anaesthetic into the skulls of their victims, they then drink the victim's brains. Generally the bat leaves between 5 to 10% of the victims brain tissue intact which is just about enough for the survivor to retain the ability to walk, eat, and poop. The charitably inclined King Rama 7 established the modern Thai Civil Service and a representative democracy in 1932 to provide these poor souls with the only work of which they were now capable, bureaucracy and politics. Even today over 85% of Thai Politicans and Bureaucrats are victims of Brain Bat attacks and are maintained at public expense.

Attacks on farangs are rarer and the Thai health service provides no support for farang victims. Generally the slobbering, brain-damaged, farang survivors of these attacks are forced to eke out a sad living by opening bar-beers in Pattaya.

"The Lyle's Flying Fox (Pteropus lylei) is a species of bat in the Pteropodidae family. It is found in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Bats of the genus Pteropus, belonging to the Megachiroptera sub-order, are the largest bats in the world. They are commonly known as the Fruit Bats or Flying Foxes among other numerous colloquial names. They live in the tropics and subtropics of Asia (including the Indian subcontinent), Australia, Oceania, islands off East Africa (but not the mainland Africa), and a number of remote oceanic islands in both the Indian and Pacific Oceans."

^ Well go ahead and dispel the Myths I was brought up with, but I thought Flying Foxes were not Bats at all- people just called them that. Real Bats are a kind of bird, aren't they?

Anyone know any Pattaya beer bars for sale?

Yepp they're a delicacy in Thailand too. My ex saw huge colonies in Oz and wondered why people didn't eat them.

    erm, no.

    they are mammals.

but perhaps you mean that they are an example of convergent evolution, ie 2 separate groups of organisms have very similar characteristics due to the nature of their niche. eg: Sharks and Dolphins have streamlined bodies for swimming.

in bats case they have very small body, light bones, similar wing structure. but they are not related but this is a requirement they both have to enable them to fly easily.

I'd think any ??? of bats... what do you call a group of bats, like a 'covey' of quail? Anyway I'd think most local bats have been caught and shipped off to China where they are a delicacy.

    Birds fly with their "arms".
Bats fly with their "fingers" which is why they have a claw at the leading edge of their wings.

There are definitely fruit-bats in Bangkok.
