the right always dig up this old chestnut about a media bias to motivate the base....and those who are able to remember back to previous bush campaigns in '92 and '04 realize this is simply theater.
case in point....
a reporter asked mccain about the connection between his campaign manager rick davis and fannie mae and freddie mac--and mccain responded that davis was no longer involved with the mortgage giants and that...

I’ll be glad to have his record examined by anybody who wants to look at it.”

so the NYT did take a look at the record of davis and fannie/freddie...and it turns out that davis was making $35,000/month from fannie/freddie. and what was he doing?.......nothing but working
against regulation of the industry. and over the last five years, davis' firm pocketed nearly $2 million directly from fannie and freddie.
so when presented with this information ---that mccain himself essentially instigated---the mccain campaign attacked the NYT.

“Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization,” Schmidt said on a conference call. “It is a pro-Obama organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, attacks Gov. Palin and excuses Sen. Obama.”
|
and schmidt then went on to attack the obama campaign...but his attacks were full of misstatements and exaggerations.

Asked about the series of errors, McCain aides could not provide evidence to back up Schmidt’s assertions.
One McCain aide, Michael Goldfarb, said Politico was “quibbling with ridiculously small details when the basic things are completely right.”
Another, Brian Rogers, responded more directly:
“You are in the tank,” he e-mailed.
