| IMHO Palin’s religious convictions will actually end up helping her/ McCain. Like it or not the US is the most religious country in the modern western world. Even those on the far extremes can get elected to national office in the US. And as for people in positions of power indicating that an action or direction they want to move the country in is the will of god. Sadly enough that is exactly what many that are devout in their religious conviction believe. And generally speaking they are not afraid to say it. Generally speaking this does not prevent them from getting elected either. Troopergate might turn into something, but I doubt it will have a significant effect on the outcome of the election. It might indeed turn out to be an abuse of power on the part of Palin, and that indeed is concerning. However, if much of what is being reported to date about the man in question is true most people will overlook the abuse of power (even though the should not) based upon viewing Palin's action as those of a protective family member trying to doing everything she could to protect her family. Most will view the protective family member as trumping the abuse of power - especially since they those attempting to protect Palin will play up the her role as a mother in general.
