| I suppose a certain amount of knowledge of the political process is important to be able to step into the Presidency. This can be achieved either at state level (Governor) or federal level- congressman or senator.
If by Executive Leadership you mean Management experience, I don't think you need that at all. As we used to say in banking- 'if we need a good manager, we'll hire one'.
The Pres has his White House chief of staff for day to day management, amongst other people- The POTUS role is more to do with leadership, policy making, foreign diplomacy and communication with the Public. He is not the senior government Bureaucrat.
