    The dropper is always on the live side.

    To be honest, it was a thought, maybe not a good thought. I don't have a copy of IEE 17th Edition, but I'm not aware of any changes permitting neutral switching so there has to be confusion somewhere in the mind of the OP (friend).

    If anyone can come up with a sitation where switched neutral would be advantageous / safer, I'm all ears

    The Dude and driving force have it correct.
    I am a pro..20 years liscensed electrician in usa and have done many projects in LOS, Viet, and Costa Rica.
    It's very dangerous and life threatening situation. Don't trust Thai electricians.most know nothing about this..as for internet expat experts.....??
