As much as you would like to believe Americans sit around mulling over religion, you're wrong. Most people could really care less.
Muslim convert? Unless someone strode out in the street with a giant sign declaring himself a Muslim convert, nobody would give a shit.
But keep up the stereotype. It's well worth the effort.![]()
Then why is it always one of the main election issues? So it's just the TD american contingent that mulls it over?Originally Posted by Texpat

I couldn't tell you the religious preference of either candidate.
I presume they're both christians, but fuck if I know, or care.
There are religious zealots in the US, as with any country. But they're the fringe freaks. Thirty percent of the US population claim no religion at all (myself included). The majority of the remainder claim a religion, but don't go to church/mosque/synagogue or pray or read religious books or any of that silly shit.
They're only Christian/Jew/Wiccan/Rastafarian because their parents told them they are. That's where it ends.
-"Among "developed nations", the US is one of the most religious. According to a 2002 study by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, the US was the only developed nation in the survey where a majority of citizens reported that religion played a "very important" role in their lives, an attitude similar to that found in its neighbors in Latin America"
-"Most U.S. adult citizens identify themselves as Christians (76.5 - 78.5% [2][3]) 2001 survey[2] found 15% of the adult population to have no religious affiliation, still significantly less than in other postindustrial countries such as Britain (44%) and Sweden (69%).[4]"
Might want to check your facts there Tex.The phrase "In God We Trust" first appeared on a U.S. coin on the 2-cent piece of 1864, and has been on all coins and paper bills since 1957. It was declared the national motto by Congress in 1956. The one dollar Federal Reserve Note of October 1957 was the first U.S. paper money with the motto. [39] The U.S. Pledge of Allegiance was modified in 1954 to add the phrase "under God". Various polls have been conducted to determine Americans' actual beliefs regarding God:
- A 2006 online Harris Poll of 2,010 U.S. adults (18 and older) found that[40] 73% of those surveyed believed in God, with 58% being "absolutely certain" and 15% "somewhat certain". Eleven percent did not believe in God, and 16% were uncertain. About 29% believe that God "controls what happens on Earth", while a plurality (44%) believes that God "observes but does not control what happens on Earth". The poll also showed that an "absolute certain" belief in God is correlated to age: only 43%-45% of those aged 18-29 were "absolutely certain" that God exists, while 54% of those aged 30-39 were "absolutely certain" that God exists, and 63%-65% of those aged 40 and older were "absolutely certain" that God exists.
- A 2006 CBS News Poll of 899 U.S. adults found that 82% of those surveyed believed in God, while 9% believed in "some other universal spirit or higher power," 8% believed in neither, and 1% were unsure.
- A 2004 Newsweek Poll of 1,009 U.S. adults, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates, found that 82% of those surveyed believed that Jesus was God or the Son of God.
- A 2000 Newsweek Poll of 752 U.S. adults, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates, found that 94% of those surveyed believed in God, while 4% did not and 2% were unsure.
- A 1998 Harris Poll of 1,011 U.S. adults found that 94% of those surveyed believed in God.

Define "a very important role" in their lives. Many people who haven't been into a church for a decade or read the bible or can't remember the last time they said a prayer would answer that way. Especially the old people.
You could live a perfectly normal life in Baltimore, or Cincinnati or Los Angeles for many, many years without ever having a single conversation on religion.
It's just not as pervasive as you "imagine." Unless somehow I happened to live in some parallel universe and you have your thumb on the pulse of America, I'd say my version is far closer to the truth than yours.
Why is it such a big deal what Obamas pastor says then? Or who in his family is a muslim? Or if he is himself? Or parties trying to get the "Jew" vote. Or the influence the "religious right" has. Or the non-stop Islamaphobia, especially by the American TD contingent?
Wright was a presidential candidate's mentor and adviser and close personal friend. The fact that he was a priest or pastor or whatever he is (am I supposed to know this?) is of no consequence. If he was a radical university professor, or non-religious leader, the same connection would be made.
Islamophobia? No.
Hatred of radical Islam extremists? Yeah, sure, I'll go along with that. Seems you're the one having problems making the distinction.
You're absolutely right, Ant. I agree with you 100%
I'm relaying my personal experience of living with and around real Americans for 44 years. Talking and joking and discussing all manner of things with people from all corners of the country. Every day for a very long time. I'm telling you my personal experience.
You're telling me what you've read.
If the subject of religion came up once a month, that's being generous. In my experience, it isn't this grounding moral lynchpin that somehow provides strength and conviction and whatever.
Most Joe Sixpack's could really give a fuck about religion. But you've read a whole lot about America's obsession with religion. Please continue...
That's not what the polls and data tend to suggest is it. Did you actually even have a look at any of them or decide they were wrong right off the bat?
I haven't actually, next-to-nothing in fact. But you're right I shouldn't put any stock in what actual published research and the like has to say on the matter. Much better to listen to some random punter's unsubstantiated opinions and anecdotal 'evidence' on an anonymous internet forum. So please, eludicate to me further on your 44yrs experience and the US Tex.But you've read a whole lot about America's obsession with religion. Please continue...![]()
so you don't know that both mccain and obama are christans? you're not aware that some on the right have been trying to spread the rumor that obama is muslim? needless to say, i find this wholly disingenuous....not least of which because you posted this about half an hour later....Originally Posted by Texpat

Meaning his point of view is not based on inspiring the thought about religion and eliciting a reaction accordingly, where as a POLL is designed to do just that...
Bing!! the golden 100 post milestone!!!!

If Obama is a Muslim or a Hebrew makes no difference to me, Ray. Is he a baptist or a pentecostal (whatever that means) or a methodist. I know not. I care not.
I couldn't tell you the difference between them if I tried. Sadly, I don't fit the stereotypical religious nutter that some try to paint here as typical. Neither does anybody I know. Well a few I've met -- but they don't tend to hang around for long after I tell them to get lost, and take your voodoo with you.
Muslim Terrorist Pilot... 22-08-2008 08:46 PM Eliminator Because islam is even more wacked out than ANY religion, just check out how they treat their own women or even a bread thief. You're just another PC nutter.
Yup, they're going crazy stoning people and cutting off the hands of thieves in the streets of Detroit.
Michigan has the second-largest Arab community outside the Middle East, after Paris.
I'd go along with that.
Detroit named nation's most dangerous city
Associated Press
Nov 18, 2007
DETROIT - In another blow to the Motor City’s tarnished image, Detroit pushed past St. Louis to become the nation’s most dangerous city, according to a private research group’s controversial analysis, released Sunday, of annual FBI crime statistics.
The study drew harsh criticism even before it came out. The American Society of Criminology launched a pre-emptive strike Friday, issuing a statement attacking it as “an irresponsible misuse” of crime data.
The 14th annual “City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America” was published by CQ Press, a unit of Congressional Quarterly Inc. It is based on the FBI’s Sept. 24 crime statistics report.
The report looked at 378 cities with at least 75,000 people based on per-capita rates for homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft. Each crime category was considered separately and weighted based on its seriousness, CQ Press said.
Last year’s crime leader, St. Louis, fell to No. 2. Another Michigan city, Flint, ranked third, followed by Oakland Calif.; Camden, N.J.; Birmingham, Ala.; North Charleston, S.C.; Memphis, Tenn.; Richmond, Calif.; and Cleveland.
The study ranked Mission Viejo, Calif., as the safest U.S. city, followed by Clarkstown, N.Y.; Brick Township, N.J.; Amherst, N.Y.; and Sugarland, Texas.
CQ Press spokesman Ben Krasney said details of the weighting system were proprietary. It was compiled by Kathleen O’Leary Morgan and Scott Morgan, whose Morgan Quitno Press published it until its acquisition by CQ Press.

There's no place like home. Peas in a pod 'n all that.
^ And you have stats to prove that it's the evil muslims doing the crime?
Nope. Never said it was evil Muslims (capital M, pickie) doing the crime.
Just thought the two factors' convergence was oddly coincidental. Tha'sall.
Thanks for reminding me never to go to Detroit. I was there once in the late 80s. Don't care to go again.
The Motor city has become the murder city. Doubt all this can be blamed on Muslims though. More likely the unemployment because of the demise of the auto industry. No stats but guessing Muslims more likely to be victims rather than perps.Originally Posted by Texpat

^^ Didn't know they had a crime problem. Do they stone people there?
Maybe they should start.
I care if obama is a muslim, now or ever before and yes it matters what HIS PASTOR spouts in sermons as obama has been a "CLOSE" friend of his pastor for over 20 years and yet obama says he has "NO Knowledge" of what his view points politically were before or are now. This I consider to be nothing but out and out LIES.
I don't like ANY religion and I consider all "followers of ANY religion" as blind fools and really just sheep. The world is a lot bigger than any of us SIMPLE people have ANY kind of control over and IF you can't grab that concept, then you are just one of the sheep, NO MATTER what your religion.
Have any of you watched "Zeitgeist, Spirit of the times" or even "Wag the dog"? We the people, have NO say so on what REALLY happens in this world and neither do the leaders of SO CALLED countries. It's all MONEY and the really big guys are whator who really control the world.
I'm tired of ALL the religious NUTTERS in this world, NO matter what the religion. All of this religious CRAP only feeds ammo to the real CONTROLLERS of this world.
