    Iran 'fires satellite into space'

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/7566804.stm

Iran has launched its first domestically-manufactured satellite into orbit, reports say.
An Iranian news network, IRINN, showed footage of what it said was a communications satellite named Safir-e Omid (Hope Envoy) being launched.
The pictures were accompanied by patriotic songs and music.
Iran has pursued its own space programme for years. In February it sent a probe into space as part of preparations for this launch.
    Long-held ambition
Footage aired on IRINN (Islamic Republic of Iran News Network) showed the launch of the rocket in darkness.
The presenter said that the satellite launch was a trial which was successful. State and military officials confirmed that the launch had taken place.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was at the launch, said one report.
Iran has long pursued its own space programme.
In October 2005 a Russian-made Iranian satellite named Sina-1 was put into orbit by a Russian rocket. Sunday's launch comes amid a long-running dispute over Iran's nuclear activities. The US and some European countries have demanded that Iran curtail uranium enrichment - but Iran protests that its purposes are peaceful and says it has a right to continue.

A trial would not include a multi million-dollar satellite. Was it a trial, or a successful launch?

    Iran launches satellite carrier

    Iran launches satellite carrier

Iran successfully orbited its first home-made satellite Sunday morning.
The satellite named Omid (Hope) has been designed and built by Iranian specialists and was orbited by an Iranian carrier rocket.

In February Tehran successfully launched the Explorer-1 research rocket, which is capable of carrying a satellite into orbit, and unveiled the country's first domestically built satellite, Omid.

The achievement has drawn much attention from around the world, specially from among Muslim nations, as Iran is under heavy sanctions by the West and the UN Security Council making it develop the technology and build every part and equipment needed in the field of aerospace.

The satellite was sent into orbit today on the occasion of the birthday anniversary of Shiites' 12th Imam (May God Hasten His Reappearance).

Joint Chief of Staff on Sunday congratulated Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and brave Iranian nation on successful launching of the rocket carrying the country's first satellite.

In a message issued on Sunday, the Joint Chief of Staff said the rocket carrying the country's first satellite, was successfully fired on the birth Anniversary of the last Imam of Shiites, Hazrat Mahdi (May God Hasten His Reappearance), thus illustrating the auspicious name of the Imam in the space.

The message said the launching marks the second instance of successful tentative firing of such rockets.

More smoke and mirrors by Iran?
They didn't launch a functioning satellite. They launched a dummy.

Iran ready to put Muslim countries' satellite in orbit

    Reuters
    August 18, 2008

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Monday it was ready to help fellow Muslim states launch satellites into orbit after it successfully put a dummy satellite into orbit -- a move that may increase Western suspicions over its atomic ambitions.

Iran said on Sunday it had put the home-grown dummy satellite into orbit on a domestically made rocket for the first time. The long-range ballistic technology used to put satellites into space can also be used for launching weapons.

Iran says has no intention to do so.

Head of Iran's Aerospace Organization, Reza Taghipour, said Iran wanted to help Muslim countries to launch satellites.

"I am announcing now that Iran is ready to launch satellites of friendly Islamic countries into space," Taghipour told state television.
