'Da Torpedo' arrested on lese majesty charge

Police Tuesday arrested a government supporter, known as Da Torpedo, on charges of lese majesty following an order by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej for police take action against her urgently.




Speaking to reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Samak said he had received a police report that Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, better known as Da Torpedo, attacked the highest institution while joining a demonstration at Sanam Luang against the People's Alliance for Democracy.


Samak said police would take legal action against her.


"The person violated the laws with her words, which affected several institutions. I ordered police to take action against the person immediately," Samak said.


Earlier, the Army filed a complaint with police to take legal action against Daranee for having attacked the highest institution while speaking on stage of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship.


Pol Maj Gen Amnuay Nimmano, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 1, said Dararnee allegedly made statement in contempt of the highest institution on the DAAD stage at Sanam Luang on Thursday and Friday.


Amnuay said the South Bangkok District Court approved an arrest warrant against her and she was arrested by Chana Songkram police in Phaholyothin area Tuesday.

"The person violated the laws with her words, which affected several institutions. I ordered police to take action against the person immediately," Samak said.

Well, this thread has gotten altogether wacky, hasn't it?

I followed the link to the offending speech which was, as was previously mentioned, in Thai. It appears as though the offending speech has been highlighted in red throughout the article. My Thai's okay but I tried to read the first red paragraph and couldn't really put it together. Several references to Khun Thaksin but that was all I got. Thai to English dictionary & transliteration might be of help if you cut and paste. It will come out very stilted but may give an idea as to what "Da Tompedo" is saying. Or someone who's actually fluent or has access to someone fluent in English and Thai could hammer out a quick summary...

I could be wrong and the offending speech is not in fact in red. The comments at the bottom are more fun and easier to read.

I gather some stones may have had a mention.

Many (or most) here are expats. What seems to be a "bad attitude" is nothing more than our observations. That said, it is NOT our country so it is unlikely that complaints by farangs will be given any credence.

Nice, "enlightened" western attitude you have there. Keeping one's mouth shut does not mean agreement. Let's apply the same laws to your home country and see how you like them, then. Those of us who live here, should be aware that some things are best not discussed. The cost of living and other amenities make it worthwhile for us to make it our home. "Going native" will serve no one's interests, certainly not ours.
