Thailand : Protester arrested for lese majeste

PM wants lese majeste charge for protester

(BangkokPost.com) - Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej Tuesday ordered police to take legal action against Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, a member of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship, on lese majeste charge in relation to a speech she gave last week.

Ms Daranee gave a speech on July 18 at Sanam Luang.

According to army deputy spokesman Col Sirichan Ngathong, her speech insulted the monarchy.

Mr Samak said this is an important matter and cannot be neglected, so he decided to ask police to take action against her.

Looks awfully butch. Maybe that's why the BiB are keeping their distance.

How did she insult the monarchy, I wonder?

That is the trick!y bit !!
If it is repeated in court ( or anywhere else) as evidence then the person who repeated it would also be guilty !!!

One might be tempted to suggest that even reporting it here would be taking a chance. Thai cops love to charge expats with Lese Majeste. Much potential for a hefty bribe.

This has always been an issue for me. We can call Bush an idiot or whatever. Have comedians mock him on TV, that's television, no problem.

But say something bad about "you know who" and your nuts are in a vice.

Free country, I think far from it...

What g2bh said. It's a catch-all law that people in power use as a last (or sometimes first) resort to silence their enemies. Any utterance remotely referencing the throne is seized on and used to legally bludgeon the poor sod into submission. They do it as much to Thais as well as farangs. An effective weapon for immature mental weaklings.

We get to pretty much say what we want . Look at Jay Leno or the other late night comedians they rip the presidents to "shreds" for a joke of course.

But here we know they are all lying thieving bastards
we can talk all we want about it but of course can't do anything about it.

I Thailand you can't even talk about it. Not the same at all...

Wow so many farangs here with a totally bad attitude to Thailand and its people.
I would suggest to you that corruption is certainly endemic in the Uk and possibley also throughout the western world.

The king here is the one unifying factor for most of the people and having seen many of the outstanding efforts he has made to improve the lives of the Thai people their love for him is well deserved.

I pity this wonderful man who really cares for his people and must be hurting very badly and seriously worried about the future of his country.

For anyone to talk as badly about him as I am told this woman did is beyond belief for me---she should be locked away for a long time.

Court issues warrant for Sondhi on lese majeste charge

(BangkokPost.com) - The Criminal Court allowed police to issue an arrest warrant for media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul on lese majeste charge after he referred to a speech given by Daranee Charnchoengsilpakul, who was arrested Tuesday on the same charge.

Ms Daranee, alias "Da Torpedo", was caught following her speeches on a United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) rally stage late last week.

The court allowed the arrest warrant request on behalf that Mr Sondhi break the criminal law.

If found guilty, he faces a three-year imprisonment.
