^ I know. Living in Asia can be really heart wrenching. The stuff we see every day that would have people in the West boycotting & campaigning left, right & centre... How do you change it?

Not possible. A combination of less education and poverty means that the locals have less time and ability to worry about animal rights.

Talking of dumping, where I used to live in Thailand the locals would take kittens from ferral cats and put them in a bag and throw them under my house from their motorbike

    Vinegar

First thing that you did when you got a new dog was to go to the grocers and buy a vinegar barrel !
Sarsons used to supply in wooden casks - probably about 25 gallons -you took your own bottle to be filled .
If you paid the 30/- that the grocer pais as deposit you got one- took it home and cut a dog sized hole on one end and that was it !
The soaked in fumes were good for a couple of years !- and the dog didn't mind !

great stuff, awesome thread, i must admit surprise at how good some of the dogs look in such a short time.

and really nice thread, it should be translated to thai and placed on a thai one so that some more thai.s can see the results as well, it may spur them to treat their dogs better!

I just heard about the collateral fall-out of the US housing crisis: people have to move to rental properties, most if which do not allow pets. The SPCA is full and many folks left their pets locked in the garage or house with no food.

[quote=Smeg;595561]It's an interesting topic NR, but unless you are like AO and need to hide away from thailand in a gated mooban, these sights are seen by everyone every day. I don't see the purpose of being shown more.

I was sickened and angry the first few times I saw dogs in this state, but to get over this, over the years one has to harden up and find "excuses" for the thais to allow this to continue. Now i try to think that these dogs are luckier than the many millions of wild animals that starve to death or are eaten alive every day. It helps, but not much.[/quo

NR I have been treating a poor bitch on Pattaya hill for a few weeks. She was almost bald. Mange I guess. Anyway. I bought a pack of Biomec-4000 and gave her a pill every 10days. She is completely cured now and the new hair is coming through. It's good for Heartworm,Ticks and Fleas too.

If you would like me to get a few packs for you please PM me and I will be happy to do so.

Keep up the good work. There is lots of sympathy for poor Soi Dogs on TD but few actually do anything for them. YOU are a diamond!

Well done NR, I'm a bit late on this because I couldn't get the pictures to load. Nice to see the effect that you are having on the Dog community. Like the old Monk said, it is very good for the ones that you can help. They will have a better life from now on. I hope that you allow yourself to be more than a little proud of what you have done. Good work and some good photos.

Finally got round to reading this thread. You're an absolute star NR.

One of the dogs in the pack near me has lost the use of his back legs now. I didn't think he was going to make it because I chucked him some fried chicken and he just ignored it. But a few weeks later, still alive and alert, though always looking in a very sorry state. Not much can be done about it I guess.

How did he lose the use of his legs? Hit by a vehicle? We (OK, I - they're in my garden) have 5 paraplegic dogs. They actually can have a fairly good quality of life - if someone's caring for them. On the streets they get friction burns & sores, often through to the bone, infections, urinary infections etc. It's very sad.

The dog seems to have lost the use of both it's back legs at the same time, it doesn't look like it's been hit by a car and though it's near the soi coming into my building the cars there do not drive particularly fast (its just after a small turn in the road) so I doubt that was the cause.

Luckily the dogs all seems to be from one family so none of them seem to be giving it a hard time, and it has a nice little area of wasteland to stay in so it doesn't go out onto the road part again. There's quite a few local people there as well, just living on the other side of the wasteland and I think they provide the dogs with some food so I assume they are looking out for it too. It seems well fed, and it moves around easily enough, and even has a bit of shelter (maybe set up for it by the locals), so I guess it is luckier than most really.

    Update - November 2008

We happened to find him, by pure chance, in a ditch, cold, covered with water & paralysed. I've seen similar cases & thought it might be due to blood parasites, so took him to the vets. He was very sick, as he got a secondary respiratory infection due to lying in the water (we think for at least 24 hours). He spent 1 week in the vets & then started to raise himself up.
After a further week at my house & lots of attention from my little boy, who was great with him, I took him back to the temple yesterday - fully recovered.

Would you believe this pup was paralysed in all 4 limbs, just 2 weeks ago?

Thought I'd give this thread a bit of an update. Here's Edgar one week ago...

Here are a few other dogs from Khao Din...

This one is the same age as Edgar (never named him as nothing ever wrong with him)

This is one that had mange (like Brillo & Oo-an, but not quite as bad). He's fine, now.

Here's me trying vainly to inject, but getting 'pawed' instead...

The one on the left is now called Bitsy. We had a real problem with her in September. She had a skin infection so bad that she managed to get maggot infested wounds in her neck (through scratching). We had to take her into the center & she got put back the week we were evicted. This is her last week

Because we got evicted, we put various of our dogs in monitored temples (with the Loong Pors' permission)

These were all HRD dogs & they're doing fantastically at the temple. They were all put there because of chronic shyness/timidity with everyone but me, but most of them are really social now...

    Above is Cinq

    Next is Nooners

And Gorgy (yes, Jettie & CMN, your 'pups')

    and lastly (from HRD), Percy

A few more original Khao Din dogs...

Mariah (so called because she 'sings' in a high-pitched, some might say annoying manner)

And these two, who I never named...

and a last one of me trying vainly to inject Kao against parasites, with the hindrance of interested onlookers...
