Pattaya. Is it heaven or hell?

Pattaya is prolly the most well known tourist destination in Thailand.

For a long time Pattaya has been catering to the falang market more than anywhere else in The Kingdom. Western products are widely available, though at a cost.
Nightlife is always going to be attractive to the holidaymaker and there is no shortage of it in Pattaya.
Can anyone remember what this tourist magnet was like a decade ago?

Have you got any pics of Pattaya from days gone by?

I have to admit that I have never been to Pattaya, yet I have heard a great deal about the place.
    Some good and some bad.

If it is a holiday haven then why? While at the same time why do so many folks swear they hate the place more than their ex?

What is Pattaya really like? Is it heaven or is it hell?

    I actually love it ops:

I don't know if I could live there but I think the dogs got it right.
Jomtien, when I was there was very quiet and pleasant and 10 mins or so from Walking street.

I been led to believe that there's quite a attractive side to Pattaya that doesn't include ladies of the night.

me, i think its great, but heres a couple of articles from todays news

    www.pattayacitynews.net

Drunken Thai man repeatedly stabs himself in early morning suicide attempt.

We were first on the scene of a suspected suicide attempt at 9.30 on Wednesday Morning. The incident took place in Soi Gopia, South Pattaya inside house number 168. Khun Boongert aged 36 had sustained six self-inflicted stab wounds and was going into shock after loosing large amounts of blood. Rescue workers soon arrived to transport the man to Banglamung Hospital where he remains in a serious condition. Police did not attend the scene; however we spoke with neighbors who mentioned that the victim had spent the night drinking heavily and had just separated from his wife. The combination of drink and domestic issues apparently sent the man into a crazed state leading to the suicide attempt.
he didnt think it was great

Thai man beaten to death outside a Naklua Karaoke Bar.

An appalling case of violence now from Soi Potisan in Naklua. Police were called to the Dok Ya Karaoke Bar late on Monday night to investigate the death of a man by the entrance to the bar. The dead man, Khun Buntan aged 24 showed signs of a major head trauma and near the body was a blood stained rock and blood stains on a clay pot suggesting the man met a violent end to his life. It became clear to Police that the suspected killer was the owner of the bar who had fled before authorities arrived. The next morning, realizing he had killed the man, Khun Chansak aged 25, gave himself up to officers at Pattaya Police Station. He admitted to knowing the victim and claimed that he would often come to his bar but would never pay for drinks or food. This culminated in the violent and deadly altercation outside his bar. Khun Chansak fled the scene but was not aware that he had killed the man until a family member contacted him. He was taken back to the scene of the crime where he re-enacted the chain of events leading to the murder for officers and the gathered media. He has been charged with murder and is now on remand waiting to explain his actions to a judge.
he thought it was great but then had a sudden change of mind, probably seconds b4 he died.

Man shot and seriously injured in Banglamung, an illegal money lender is prime suspect.

Late on Tuesday Night, Banglamung Police were called to Banglamung Hospital to deal with the victim of a shooting. The seriously injured man is Khun Narong aged 27 who has just been released from prison following a drugs conviction. Police spoke with the victim’s mother who mentioned that he had borrowed some money from a local money lender but could not keep up repayments of 30,000 Baht per month. The injured man was later transferred to Chonburi Hospital for more specialized treatment. His chances of survival are rated at only 30%. Police are now urgently attempting to locate the shooter who remains at large.
he thought it was great untill the 30 k he borrowed run out and heng had to deal with him

Like Dirty Dog I have also been a Pattaya bloke for a few years.

And like all old hands, I will say it was better 15 years ago, sure the shops were not in Pattaya then like they are now, but it was better.

Now the fucking traffic is killing Pattaya for me, fok nose what it's gonna be like when all the building projects that are ongoing are complete.

Still good for a night out though! To live there ad infinitum, no, not now.

Hi begs, i just bought 1 and a half rai 5km from lotus, i really cant stand this traffic now, for me to get to soi jiraporn, the one with 3 speed bumps takes 20 minutes in my car, 5 minutes by bike from my shophouse, foking ridiculous, i got to admit the old days were better when every bar had at least 20 gals and used to drag you in by ur knob, its quite a sad state of affairs when you have to ask these gals to take your knob in hand and drag you into their bar
still the choice of food is a lot better now...

Alright DD, yea the choice is good now, but the traffic is too much, seen all the building work that is gonna go on around Soi Bongkot Towards Nirun Condo area, and Soi Batman? Fuck me, that road is so small but they are putting loads of houses and apartment buildings up.

I will keep my place in Number 3 road, but I have built a house in Phu Kradung, Loei. I was back in Thailand for 7 weeks April/May, most of the time I was in Loei. It was nice to get back to Pattaya in some way, but it's also nice to get away from it in other ways.

The nice bit about coming back to Pattaya was, I was on my own! Straight up Yodsak!!! :P

The bad thing was not being able to Park anywhere and the traffic jams.

French man stabbed in the stomach during beer bar party.

At the Pattaya Memorial Hospital, medical staff admitted a French man; Mr. Francoise Gene aged 42 who had sustained a knife wound to his stomach. Pattaya Police were called in to investigate the case and discovered that the incident took place at the King Kong Beer Bar in Soi Beokeow. The suspected attacker was Khun O, a cousin of the bar owner who decided not to hang around for the Police. Apparently there was a fight inside the bar and during the altercation Khun O allegedly stabbed the victim with a knife. For now, Police are attempting to locate the woman who will face serious assault charges when caught.

Exclusive report. Pattaya’s Water Crisis reaches a critical point as the Maprachan Reservoir runs dry.

A group of foreign residents situated on the banks of the Maprachan Reservoir alerted us to an alarming fact. They claim that the Maprachan Reservoir is now empty. As we continue to monitor the deepening water crisis here in Pattaya we went down to the Reservoir on Friday afternoon to see for ourselves and can confirm that the reservoir is now all but empty with small pockets of stagnant water remaining. The Maprachan is the main source of domestic water for the Pattaya and Banglamung areas and it now appears that even with a sustained period of rain, the reservoir may not return to normal levels until next year at the earliest. With new developments continuing to be built in the East of Pattaya and blocks of shop-houses being constructed around the Pattaya area, where is the additional water used by these new constructions going to come from? It is clear that Pattaya City Hall and the District administration have to act now to combat this crisis which is now at a critical level. We will closely monitor the situation here on Pattaya City News.

    Good:
    Beer bars are open 24-7

I can wander around completely pissed at 3am and not worry (Of course, I don't wear any gold like some dumb foks).

The girls aren't as mercenary as their BKK sisters. If you show them a good time, they don't care about the money. Didn't have one starfish on me.

Cheap apartments on 3rd Road if you stay for a month or more.

    Many good Italian Restaurants

Cheap seafood at Thai restaurants (but not on Walking Street).

    Bad:
Can't get a decent Indian curry. Neeroy's is supposed to be the best, but it just gave me the shits and the naan bread is crap.

Lucifer was raided and had to take a piss test. I wasn't worried, but it still ruined my night. That's the last time I go to a disco in Pattaya.

More ladyboys working in regular beer bars.

Never had any racial shit happen to me before in Pattaya. But on this trip I had to deal with a few morons. I was walking towards the Royal Garden from walking street with my gal (who was tight) when a bunch of young Brits on a songteaw started calling me a Paki shit and started whistling at my gal. Same thing happened again when I was walking alone on Second Rd. Two drunk Brits on a songteaw called me a fokin Arab. Wrong country and race, you mental midgets.

Why are so many ladyboys working in regular beer bars? Why do the bar owners employ them? Obviously there are blokes that like a bit of cock in a skirt but surely not that many. Or am I just being a bit naive?

From what I hear, most of the ladyboy punters are ex-straights who did every perverse thing imaginable to Thai girls and are looking for something new. Be careful, dd

Nana Plaza is an overpriced hellhole. I'd rather take the time and effort to flirt with regular girls than spend a dime on any nightlife venue in Bangkok. 600 baht barfine is ridiculous. Then you pay 1,000 baht for ST (or 1,500 baht if you're an old fok). For just a few more baht, you could pay for a roundtrip bus ticket to Pattaya (210 baht), stay at a small guesthouse like the Dobler House (700 for two night), and barfine two gals at once and have a threesome (1,500).

Water woes blamed on poor plans
    Published on August 10, 2005

Aerial photographs have found the water shortage in drought-hit Rayong province was caused by poorly planned industrial settlements, new communities and roads built across waterways.

Such chaotic growth robbed the Dok Krai-Nong Pla Lai basin of about 70 per cent of its water-catchment areas, according to a report by the Water Source and Agricultural Information Institute (WAII).

Roryol Chitradon, director of the WAII, yesterday said the water shortage on the eastern seaboard, especially in Rayong and Chon Buri, had been caused by the construction of factories in the Map Ta Put Industrial Estate since 2002 and the expansion of farmland and communities in the area. Roads were also built across the watercourses and tributaries of the Rayong River, the report said.

“Rainfall at Nong Pla Lai reservoir was 600 million-700 million cubic metres per year, but it retained just 300 million cubic metres,” it said. The situation at the Dok Krai reservoir was similar. “Both reservoirs retained just more than 30 per cent of the precipitation. They should have retained more than 50 per cent,” Roryol said.
