It will get the hard liners up in arms. Of course, there are clearly political motivations on the part of Turkey. Softening some of the more distasteful practices of Islam will help in gaining entry to the EU. The primary reason for the changes is the very fact that Islam needs to relook at the rules that pertained to the Dark Ages to align them with modern realities. Supporters of the Christian Reformation weren't exactly greeted with open arms by the average Christian so expect any changes to Islam will be just as hard and long in coming.
