^ My first pull in HK was at JB's actually.
Island School kid, bit of a goth.
Kinda proud of that. She worked there.
No idea what she saw in me.
On visa rums I from Taiwan used to alternate between The Beer Castle (downstairs from our office ) and the HK Rugby Club just around the corner- Hennesy road? ( corporate membership - sign for everything)
Lovely place !!!![]()
^ The Beer Castle, as I remember, was in Wanchai. The Rugby Club was in Happy Valley (great place). Think you might be a bit geographically confused.
No No ! The Club House was in Happy Valley and indeed a good place- but for lunchtime - come out of the Beer Castle - turn left - main road - turn right - a few doors down was the Rugby Club Dining room and bar - first floor - show membership card - in you go and wonderful Western food and beers !!!
Beer Castle was indeed in Wanchai
Chinthee, did your kids go to Island School or West Island?

Weird, but I used to have office girls just staring at me and trying to pick me up, especially at lunch at Pacific Place. Yes, I was fairly young, handsome and rich, not like today, poor, fat, old and ugly.
Now I have Thai girls staring at me, but I suspect for the wrong reasons.

God, I'm feeling all nostalgic now, too. Lived there 3 times. Once as a kid (Navy brat) from '78 to '80, once when I was young free & single (met my husband in a bar in Wanchai called Crossroads - JB's was only for bloody yuppies; Crossroads & Pussycats were far more fun, esp when the US fleet was in!!!) and then moved back with my husband in 1994 & eventually left when I moved here late 2001.
Last time I went back was last May, I think. Everything's changed so much, even since 2001. Very few of the bars I used to go to are still there, the Furama's gone (the revolving restaurant there was a good place to take out of town visitors). Don't know if I'd go back there to live again, but it's definitely a city in a class of it's own.
I remember the Beer Castle, as well. Does anyone remember the Wanch pub?

^Yes, I remember all those. Good memories. Hong Kong as we knew it is no more, sadly.

Anyone know if Carnegies is still there? It used to have some great music. Have some photos of myself & hubby there dressed as Frank 'n' Furter & Magenta after going to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show. That night still has to rate as one of my best nights out ever!
HK ?
curry at the Indian on the Gurkha Base .........![]()
I certainly do. It used to get unbelievably crowded in there especially on Sundays after a hash run. Way back I had really short hair and had problems getting into pubs around Wanchai because they thought I was in the forces. Often had the MPs hassling me at 4am.Originally Posted by November Rain

It is funny to think that some of us who we think we have never even come close to meeting may have been at the very same bar, cafe etc.. many years ago.
Yes, exactly 1990 but buggered if I can remember anyone's name from that time! Although I do remember Scottish Ian from JBs: our first night in there and we had 4 Long Island Ice Teas and then got up to leave. Ian then reminded us that we had 4 more Ice teas to drink: it was 2 for 1. That morning I was kicked (literally) out of a fire door recess in a building near the Star Ferry terminal by a newspaper seller who wanted her pitch back. My mate turned up a day later after ending up in the New Territories with a hostess from one of the clubs. Expensive nights in those days; both money and brain cell wise.
The Gurkha base is obviously long gone (actually the Black Watch replaced the Gurkha's as HK regiment prior to the hangover) but the curry place lives on. Shaffi's (?) relocated to the top end of Wanchai Rd and last thing I knew was still going strong.Originally Posted by Mid
I used to be a Hasher out there (the base was in the Lam Kan Rd beyond Taipo, buggered if I can remember it's name) 1994-5, when I lived in Shatin.
Bluddy well oughta be- the place always made good money. Don't tell me you were one of the girls that used to dance on the bar. Did you know Rowena?Originally Posted by November Rain
The 'blond buxom girl' in the Wanch was stll there thru' the mid and late 90's. The Wanch was one of the oldest surviving expat pubs in HK and occupied a special place in peoples hearts, but I believe it closed a few years ago.Do you remember the Bull n' Bear, and that jazz club in Admiralty with the famous doorman with the bulldog, and that brit pub at the top end of Lan Kwai Fong (then moved to the lower end- never the same again)? All gone. I was a shareholder of the crowd that took over the old Bull n Bears premises, but it went broke. Now it is occupied by Madisons, who moved there from Pacific Place (maybe called Pomeroys when you were there). I used to run their Quiz nights.

On occasion, I was, I'm afraid. No, I didn't know Rowena.Originally Posted by sabang
Definitely remember the Bull & Bear. They used to do some good English pub grub, but not quite so good towards the end. Not the jazz club, jazz never was my thing. Which Brit pub in LKF? Not Scotties? Anyone remember the Scotties Standard Chartered $10 nights? I believe they were Mondays. Used to spend the entire week trying to get hold of Standard Chartered $10 notes (this was again about 1990, before they changed to coins) & spend the following day very hungover in work (at that time I was a Kindergarten teacher)Originally Posted by sabang
Remember Pomeroys too. Very good champagne Sunday brunch. Those were the days...![]()

I used to eat at a noodle/ Dim-sung stall in Jaffre road .
Was attracted by his sign
IF YOU DON'T EAT HERE WE WILL BOTH STARVE
Lovely man -After a few visits - as soon as I appeared at the entrance of the alley he would send his wife off for a couple of cold Heinekens.
Every 6 weeks for 5 years - I wonder if he is still there ?
Last trip was in 1999![]()

^^^ None of the above. I'm not blonde (dark brown hair)![]()
That would be Mad Dogs. Saw a few Arsenal players in there one night. Arrogant wankers. Tony Adams ended up on his own asleep on the bar.Originally Posted by sabang
There was also the Beachcomber at the top of Lan Kwai Fong. Scotties was full of brats who would walk outside and vomit whatever flavoured vodka they had just consumed.
