"Sam Allardyce must be regretting scrapping plans to make his Newcastle United squad spend most of this week locked away in a training camp, after Joey Barton was arrested on suspicion of assault in Liverpool in the early hours of yesterday morning.
A spokesman for Merseyside police confirmed: "Two men and a woman were arrested in Church Street at 5.30am on suspicion of assault. They were taken to a city-centre police station where they are still being dealt with."
Last night there was no indication from the arresting officer as to whether the trio - understood to include Barton - would be charged. It seems that the England midfielder went for a night out in Liverpool after the 1-0 Boxing Day defeat at Wigan only to be arrested before dawn yesterday. "The club is aware of an incident," a Newcastle spokesman said last night. "But until we have more information it would be inappropriate to comment."

Senior Newcastle players pleaded to be allowed time with their families over Christmas and, against his better judgment, their manager acceded to their request, only to learn yesterday that Barton was in police custody.
Barton, signed by Allardyce from Manchester City for £5.8m last summer, is already facing a crown court trial this summer, charged with actual bodily harm after an alleged assault on his then City team-mate Ousmane Dabo last spring.
His latest brush with the law could not have come at a worse time for Allardyce, who last night conceded that he was back "under the cosh" after the reverse at Wigan. In recent months the club chairman Chris Mort's reaction to poor results has often been to back Allardyce by stressing that he and Newcastle's owner, Mike Ashley, were not "short-term thinkers" but no such reassurance was forthcoming yesterday, although club sources last night insisted no sacking was imminent.
With friends of Alan Shearer having let it be known that the former Newcastle and England captain would not be averse to returning to his old club as manager, Allardyce's hold on his job appears increasingly fragile - and particularly when Ashley watched the Wigan game while sitting among visiting fans, some of whom were chanting Shearer's name. "It's the same old story, isn't it? You lose a game and you lose it badly and you are under the cosh, especially if you are the manager," said Allardyce. "I cannot blame the fans for what they were singing."

The ABH charge he is up for on that black fellow is a more serious charge, but I only got CS for it, so I suppose a top footballer & top lawyer will get the same or likely less, if he is found guilty at all.

It was only a week or so ago he was complaining about the over reaction of Newcastle supporters to the teams performances.

Perhaps he should set an example.




Barton remanded on assault charge



Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton has been remanded in custody charged with assault.
The 25-year-old is accused of common assault and affray and appeared before Liverpool magistrates following an incident in the city's Church Street.
He was arrested on Thursday with his brother Andrew, 19, and Nadine Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside.
The player will reappear on 3 January and misses Newcastle's matches against Chelsea and Manchester City.
The court was told that Barton and a group of friends were allegedly involved a row with another group inside a McDonald's restaurant at 0530 GMT on Thursday.
Mr Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, was remanded in custody by magistrate Carol Myers.



The case is due back before the same court on 3 January, when Mr Barton is expected to appear again.
A spokesman for Newcastle United said the club was not making any comment about the hearing.
Mr Barton's brother, Andrew, 19, of Widnes, is charged with actual bodily harm and affray. Ms Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside, is charged with common assault and affray. Both are on bail and are due to appear before magistrates in January.

Barton bailed as he sobs in jail

JOEY Barton has been released from jail after his solicitors pleaded for him to be bailed after he struggled to cope with prison life.
At exactly 6.00pm Barton left Liverpool Prison.
He was collected by his solicitor and Peter Kay, the chief executive of the Sporting Chance Clinic in Hampshire.

Members of Barton’s family were also waiting in cars outside the jail.
Inmates at Liverpool's Walton prison told The Sun he struggled to cope behind bars despite his hardman image.
It's emerged that the soccer star — involved in a series of scrapes on and off the pitch — was living in constant terror of being attacked behind bars.

An insider said earlier: “Joey’s not short of a few bob, but he’s frightened to death he’ll be assaulted.

“As the most famous inmate he’s an instant target.
“Everyone knows he’s a Premier League footballer with millions in the bank.

“Joey’s only hope has been to flash the cash. So far he’s managed to avoid getting battered. But he’s terrified that money won’t be enough.

“You hear him crying in his cell at lights-out time. He may be a big-time Charlie on the pitch, but in jail that counts for nothing.”

Warders told inmates not to intimidate Barton — worth £5.8million and with one England cap. But one lag squared up to him, calling him “scum of the earth”.

Scouser Barton was held in Liverpool on Boxing Day after a bust-up.

Two teenagers claimed he attacked them.
Barton is already facing a court date over an alleged attack on a former Man City team-mate.
He has denied assault.
City considered firing him in 2005 after he poked a cigar in a player’s eye.
And he was held last March after an alleged row with a cabbie.

Everyone seems to have gven him a chance, but he always falls into his old ways, pity there isnt an asbo card in football.

Sounds more like Barton was on the diet of the 70's.
I recall my football league team in the day rushing back from away matches to get a few pints in the local before closing.
I just dont see the players of today in the EPL having to do that
