| What is a 'child'? I’d like to know what your definition of pedophile is. Under 18? (one day under?). How about a willing 15 year old sexually active teenager—I won’t call her a ‘girl’ since she can get pregnant—should a man go to jail for years for having sex with a willing 15 year old teenager? 15 seems to be a cutoff age in Thailand below which the ‘crime’ is prosecuted more seriously, and the adult ‘offender’ seems to receive a longer sentence.
Wikipedia: “Pedophilia is the primary or exclusive sexual attraction by adults to prepubescent youths. …The term pedophile is also used colloquially to denote an adult who is sexually attracted to adolescents or youths below the local age of consent.”
So, the word can mean two different things, depending on what the agenda of the prosecutors/accusers is.
I understand why there are laws against having sex with children, children being defined as not having reached sexual maturity (‘prepubescent youths’ in Wikipedia’s terminology). I don’t understand the ‘foaming-at-the-mouth’ ‘string-em-up’ mentality when two people who aren’t children decide to have sex.
In the United States female teachers have sex with their male students and often only get slapped on the wrist. These female teachers are not met with the same kind of hysteria guaranteed to hit a man if he has sex with a 17 year old, or a 16 year old, or a 15 year old. I remember a couple of female teachers and other older women from my teenage years who I wished would have had sex with me! It would have been an educational experience.
A 16 year old boy can have sex with a 15 year old girl (I did when I was 16), and not worry about facing a long jail sentence. “Aw, look at the cute kids having sex.” But, watch out if you are a man over 21. “You monster! I hope you have lot of money for a defense attorney! Cause we’re gonna lock you up and throw away the key! Bad, bad man!”
Teachers, and others in positions of power and authority over teenagers, are understandably expected not to have sex with their students/underlings. But when there is no ‘power dynamic’, and the sex is consensual, willing, loving and joyful—and the youth is over 15, let’s say--then why throw a man in jail for years for this? (Isn’t 15 the age of consent in one or more states in the USA?) |
