A 50-YEAR-OLD executive from Melbourne could face the death penalty in Bali after prosecutors decided to charge him with trafficking marijuana and hashish.
Barry Hess, a former Ansett executive and general manager of Bali's collapsed airline Air Paradise, was arrested last month after police allegedly found 14.4 grams of hashish and 2.7 grams of marijuana in his Kuta home.
Initially police charged Hess with drug possession, which carries a 10-year sentence.
They claimed Hess admitted buying the drugs for personal use, and said a urine test detected the presence of drugs in his system.
At the opening of his court hearing yesterday, prosecutors announced they were also charging Hess with intending to sell the drugs, upgrading his possible penalty to execution.
They also included several alternative charges, the most lenient that of being a drug addict who had not reported to authorities. Such an offence is punishable by a maximum of six months' jail.
Prosecutors will nominate at the end of the trial what charge and penalty they believe is most appropriate, but the judges are not bound by their recommendations. The case will continue next week.

sounds a bit harsh to me....

    . . . that's because he's not wearing a hat and growing a beard . . . and is from Java.

Sadly, the guy is a dork for having these drugs at his place - 50-years old and trying to re-live his youth.

I hope he gets his 6-months . . . but not more. (6months rarely means six months anyway)

Some like their cold ones in the evening, others their pipes or roll-ups, can't see anything wrong with this at all.

In this case, I suspect someone ratted on the guy as part of some feud or business conflict - bad luck.

Why does Indonesia have such strong marijuana and hashish laws?

The amount in his possession is barely anything.

Anyone know why these laws are so strong and/or when they came into existence?

    You've got it stroller.
I've spent several weekends in Bali with mainly Jakarta based expats, staying at their weekend villa's.
Theres a lot more happening than weed, I can assure you. No one seemed the least bit paranoid, and the drugs flowing there put anything I'd seen in HK to shame.

He must've pissed off someone important.

If you rub it the wrong way, Indonesia is corrupt to the core.
'Important' people can get away with literally anything, and have anything they want landed on people they want out of the way.

The law doesn't distinguish much between narcotic classes, not unusual in Asia.

I'd be interested to know the origin of the legislation as well.

The risk isn't high, but the punishment severe.

If you wanna dance, you gotta pay the band.

He knew what the law was. Lock him up with the rest of the criminals.

I'm a little confused by the thread title, "Another CEO...".

Have I missed something here? Was there another prominant businessman done recently?

^ Barry Hess has no ploblem with money though.
He has crossed the wrong person. In Indon, it can be as petty as upsetting a favoured mistress of a 'someone'.

Its hardly news worthy anymore because the average person don't give a toss about people caught with drugs in Asian countries.

I mean you want to play the game you got to pay the man if you get caught.

After those stupid Aussies got banged up in Bali after carrying the smack, its like, well who gives a fuk about this stupid tosser as hes an idiot.

If the bastard has got that much money why didn't he just get on a plane , fly to Amsterdam and smoke as much shit as he wanted. ?

    Friggin turd he is.

    jeez.

Tez, theres a difference between someone caught with a small stash of dope for personal consumption, and someone caught muling commercial quantities of smack internationally.

In Adelaide, you'd get a $50 dollar fine for that and, more painfully, have your stash confiscated.

funny, I've heard them ask why the west has such slack laws.

It's their country, they can have any kind of laws they want. If their laws infringe on your lifestyle then don't go there. It's when ignorant foreigners visit another country/culture and continue to live in a way that their host country deems illegal under the penalty of severe jail time that they get into trouble.

With the Bali 9 fiasco just happening he can hardly say he didn't know about the tight drug laws and massive sentences.

He's a dumbass. Plain and simple.

I guess this is as good a place to ask this as any.

I have a son at Uni abroad who spends summers with me. A top kid, top grades, top Uni, etc.. However, he has one big vice. He loves 420. In past summers, I've taken him to KPG and he's had no problems indulging there at that famous place overlooking the sea.

However, I don't want the kid to screw up his life next summer. Is it dangerous for him to be smoking in Thialand today?
